Alriteyyyyyy, so boy n girls, not sure if this has been done before, hope I can say of the first, one of the few to give this a whirl! ![Big Grin](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
Few months back, I did the split cooling, with a bmw power steering reservoir... it helped, but the small tank was useless...
Soooooo, after some time, I decided to think why we dont have front mount reservoirs like gt500s, cobras etc... Rear mount is nice, but I think this is much simpler and probably more effective as its closer.
Pics are self explanitatory... been cracking at this all day, hands hurt, blood was shed lol, tons of beer was consumed so some of this may not make sense right now I'll clarify anything in the AM. Overall very happy with the end result!Basically I removed the cabin air filter box... in place put a air filter material, wrapped in kn filter dust wrap, and put in place of the air filter. I live in a fairly clean Province/Country, where dust and pollution is minimal so I dont mind not having the full effect of the cabin filter... For those who want to lecture on the importance of the cabin filter, please move on...
Had a custom ice box tank made, roughly 1.2 gallons! Much BIGGER than the bmw reservoir, but smaller than the rear mount tanks. On the tank 3 fittings... top left is the return (from IC), bottom right is the out (to pump, to he, to IC), and bottom left is the dump valve (for draining melted ice at the track!).
Few key points, Yes I know its going from icebox to pump to he to ic... for daily driver I think this is better than going from icebox to pump to ic.
Benefits of the reservoir (icebox) ...
- larger capacity/cooling than bmw res.
- ability to add ice at the track!
- drain ice water easily
- fits without major modifications (just cut top plastic cover)
Ran into few issues with the stock hoses.. the stock T I had in place after splitting the system was causing bit of issues. Ran new plumbing from icebox output to pump.
End cost $200 tank, $75 fittings, $75 piping, misc materials $350.
Data logging to follow with and without ice... waiting to see hopefully it stops raining tomm!
Enjoy! (Any questions please post below) Tank is from Dads custom tanks, talk to Danny, let him know "tbal tank"

Sounds like a much better solution than running hoses all the way to the back of the car, cutting holes in the bottom of the car for hoses to run through and taking up trunk space with a tank or having to take out your spare tire (if you have one) to put a tank in place.
Good job![thumbs](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif)
Only thing I would say to maybe improve on this is to actually take some measurements of the area or make something out of cardboard/foamboard and get a custom shaped tank made instead of just basically a square tank laid in there then it would be really sweet and maybe even gain some more capacity too using all the dead space.

Great work! Far less a pain in the *** than a rear mount. I agree with the reccomendation on a more custom fit tank. Might make a mock up of that to see about getting it made. I think a more custom fit tank for the space and black powder coat would make it fit in nicely and provide more volume still.

Thanks for the feedback guys! There is quite a bit of room in there. I was thinking of relocating the aux battery and having tank made to fit the entire area but time was the problem lol.
Airbox, everything works fine, just need cover with a filter of some sort so fresh air can still enter but keep dirt/dust out. For those who live in really dusty areas this mod may not be so great unless you can block that port really good. It's about a 3x12" rectangle. I used this knfilter dust wrap, with a filter inside it to make a custom filter.
Need to datalog ASAP cept weather is crap right now lol.
Anyone have any suggestions on how to keep battery dry? Wrap in something?
Tank available from dads custom fab. I'll post email for him.

Why are you worried about the battery getting wet (as in how could it get wet)? The drain would be off away from the battery and the filling I guess you could spill but still don't see any kind of issue. I would just be worried about the aluminum tank not hitting both posts of the battery and all hell breaking loose.
Out of curiousity what are the dimensions of that tank?

I dont mean to bash your work, but i feel it looks a bit ghetto and the point of mounting it in the trunk is to keep the outer ambient temps down. your ice box and lines are going to be fighting whatever you temps are under the hood. water will get hot quite quickly. As for the long lines and holes being drilled (most of the complaints i see) that extra water helps desaturate the heat from the blower. I am still working out what parts i would like to use in mine but i can assure you it will be no less then a 10 gal setup.

Underground racing puts their water resevoir right in the engine bay on the TT Lambo kits, right behind the engine which is actually right next turbos and manifolds that get blazing hot. This idea is actually totally separated from the engine in a complete different compartment, yes under the hood still but totally separated so in my opinion 100 times better than the below shown setup. Just saying...... And 10 gallons sounds absolutely crazy and unneeded for your future kit you speak of.

All the Gt500s, cobras, or anyone for that matter running SC systems run larger tanks IN THE ENGINE BAY, so why can't we. If a small bmw reservoir made such a difference with cooling, this bigger tank will make a difference for sure. 10 gal is stupid overkill for daily use.

Underground Racing fabricates dyno charts as well as blackmails customers when they are not satisfied with the results. Heck they cant even get the cars to run without keeping the stock ecu in the car for idle. They suck. do your research. lmao. Underground. Theyve been getting their asses handed to them left and right lately. lawsuit after lawsuit. thy build **** cars. nobody ever asks how many motors they go through. the 10 gal setup i use on my supra is rated for 4000hp. i live in an area that is well over 100F for most of the year. 10 gal is not crazy. my 1700whp supra drives around in these temps as if it were a constant 55F outside. my **** works, bottom line.

nice work, i like the idea of copying the cobra setup. those guys make retarded amounts of power... next we need someone to adapt a 3.4L Bell S/C then we'll make some real numbers :P
btw, adding 10 gallons of fluid to the trunk of your car plus the weight of the big tank would offset the gains from cooling. 10 gallons of water weighs 60-70lbs? plus the tank? so you're close to adding 100 pounds of weight. and from 1/4 mile experts, 100 pounds of weight equals .1 on your 1/4 mile... are you gonna gain more than .1 from the cooling?
you mention your 1700whp supras which definitely need that much cooling... but your 500WHP 55k.... i doubt it

How often do you think underground lambo owners actually drive them also? As for the 10 gal setup I run, you do realize over half of it is in the lines and core, as well as i wash tank in the middle. its not like i have a 10 gal tank stting in the trunk. its only a 3.5 gal.
