Just because there are that many people listed in the case doesn't mean that many people have issues or ever will. I have worked for MB through the whole life of the engine and when a 63 engine goes confetti flies throughout the department. That being said it never happens although it would be huge money for us even under warranty. I have only dealt with one myself on a BS, but that was due to an injector failing and filling the engine with fuel causing it to hydrolock. I am really interested what real failure numbers they are dealing with instead of a "how many people own an AMG" number. Also them expecting them to have repaired it under a recall doesnt seem like it would hold up as it's not a safety issue, but I am no expert. That would mean all car manufacturers would be held liable for any defects for any time period on a car?

Heres one instance for you. 133k km now with am ML63 delivered in dec 2006. Dealer maintained from day on on time every time. In the shop about 40 times over the 7 years of warrantee. The last 2 times in the shop it sounded like the engine was dying but nothing done. 30k left on the warrantee by milage but 2 months over the time (What about the 2 months over the 7 years the dealer had the car for the failures that were too numerous to remember and too long a story to go into here.) Suffice it to say it had an intermittent problem that went on for 4+ years that was actually dangerous. CATASTROPHIC engine failure due to worn out cam shafts. resale value + $0
Meeting with MB Canada tomorrow to see if they will help me. I know another ML63 driver who had a similar failure after only 4 years but he didn't get the extended wanantee. So theres another instance for you. He bought the ML after he and his wife test drove mine as a favour to the dealer. Cost him more than 10k if I was told right.

so the net is... A seller may knowingly sell a defective product covered by an express warranty, and if the product fails after the expiration of the warranty term and the buyer has to pay for repair of the product, the seller is not in breach of warranty.

Once the car is out of warranty, the manufacturer is off the hook!

ML63 2010 POS

I have a 2010 ML63 and it has spent the majority of this year in the shop. First it was head bolts that they replaced which took three months. In the process, they shorted the distribution system which I got to pay to replace, then fuel injectors, etc.
I had to pay half the costs for the head bolts after quite a bit of arguing since they weren’t going to do anything at all initially which cost me ~$4000. Once month later, it’s back in the shop and needs the engine reconstructed because the tensioner guide broke off and destroyed the engine. This is a 100k+ POS and MB has no problem stealing from its customers and pawning off this crap under the guise of a luxury, high performance vehicle.

Sorry to hear. My story goes like this:
ML63 2009. 61k miles. CPO warranty.

Previous owner was affected by head bolt issue and bolts were replaced.
15k miles later at 60k I picked up the vehicle and at 61k the camshaft noise started to become very loud.
They replaced camshafts, adjusters and lifters and start to finish took 3 days.
I cannot complain about the service. Do I wish the engine would not have needed any repairs - yes but at least now all the known quirks have been addressed.

Finally got a response after over a month waiting.
$19K to rebuild the engine. Even the dealer was shocked at the cost MB quoted. Just told them to put the engine back in. I'm going to sell it for parts and go buy a real car.

Considering an R63
Hi folks,

I'm possibly buying an R63 in the near future, and, kind of came across this thread when searching for 'problems' and 'R63' in google.

How prevalent is this problem?

Is this something that if don't hear the ticking sound by 100K miles, then you likely need not worry, or, is this basically a ticking time bomb that will eventually be the death of all M156 engines sooner or later?

Hawk,

Due to the rarity of the R63 and the sweet *** status I would purchase and replace the headbolts with the revised style. IIRC there are less than 10 imported into the US

Thanks for the feedback!

Is that all that is ultimately required in order to 'diffuse the bomb' so to speak? Is this a procedure that most MB Dealers are now familiar with? Would you know what they're charging to get this done (as I might as well factor this in to my purchase price)?

My understanding is that the headbolt issue is a different one than the camshaft from the class action.

Has somebody a clue about the cost to fix these 2 problems ?

Hi There,
Did you get your R63?
Did you replace the head bolts?
I am thinking of doing the same thing.

Regards
Terry

Should have been recalled years ago problem or not. Would not touch this motor/platform even if it was free. Too many high cost issues. 12 seconds cars are not that rare now.
