E55 Exhaust System
Below is a pic (thanks Dr Chill) of the E55 factory crossover. This is not on the S,CL and SL55 and appears to be the only real difference in the W211 exhaust system.
My question is what potential issues its removal could have?
I am not sure whether to remove it entirely along with the intermediate muffler, or to remove the crossover pipe and replace the intermediate muffler with a properly designed crossover pipe like that on the M5.

Below is a diagram of the SL etc exhaust system (it's actually an AMG E500 exhaust system, but aside from diameter there is no difference to the best of my knowledge)

A properly designed crossover pipe designed like a collector would be great eg. merging to the two 2.75" pipes to a single 4" pipe and back to two 2.75" pipes.
I am not an expert on exhaust design, but the standard crossover pipe looks like a flow killing, turbulance inducing nightmare. I would like some more knowledgable opinions on the matter.

I had heard that there was a difference in the rear section as you have stated, not the full system, but I had a look at a CL at the dealership and it appeared to be the same as the on the E. can a CL owner confirm this?

The crossover-pipe is not enough I think, what about the silencers? I heard a modified SL55 a while ago and I loved the sound. Not sure if it was modified by MKB parts though.

Crossover pipes were discovered back in the early days of American musclecars probably by accident. The main purpose of a crossover pipe is to equalize exhaust pressures between the two sides and eliminate any unappealing resonating frequencies or gurgling sounds. The biggest improvement seen is a much cleaner QUIETER idle and a more pleasing (but not louder) exhaust note at all engine rpm's. The pipe should be the same diameter as the exhaust and should also come off the pipes at as small an angle possible. This will also cause a very modest gain in performance as it scavenges the cylinder banks of exhaust gases more evenly and efficiently. To my eyes, the factory crossover pipe appears slightly smaller than the exhaust pipe but based on this photo it might be an optical illusion. IMO replacing this pipe with one of any other design will make minimal difference and doesn't justify the cost or effort. It might be more worthwhile to increase the pipe diameter or replace the mufflers with more free-flowing ones.

I am going to remove the intermediate muffler all together, but am also considering removing/replacing the factory crossover pipe.
