New Air intake!!!

Hood Scoop!!!
Last time I was at the dyno, the guy was looking at the intake, and explained a very cool low profile hood scoop that went straight into throttle body when the hood was closed. This would solve the space issue on the top mount intercooler too.
I imagine it would be very inconspicuous, like this:

there was an e55 with a custom hood similar to that years ago and while i'm sure it's quite functional, it sure is ugly!

I ran the stock air box all the way up until a week before the mile. Even last year at the mile. With ported heads and larger pulley, the stock air box just becomes the next restriction. The CF airbox is NO help, just looks good. I was able to test this intake on the road and used MAP/ boost readings to know that it was working great. The front cones are open to fresh air through the grill. I made this DDK (Double Dong Kong ) lol, for making single runs and cool downs. not for driving around in 100 deg Texas heat and street racing with a heat soaked system. Although, it may still outperform the stock system.
I do not like the cones through the grill, as that is to much restriction. Like Chiromikey said.
The stock air box and the CF box still use stock filters and they just cant flow the air needed for 530 plus HP engines.. IMO The neck area at the TB sucks on both designs.
My system is made from TWO 3.5" tubes and is a perfect match for the 82mm TB. I dont have a good picture but these open front cones butt up to the front grill inlets. The system still needs more improvment but for one big run, then cool down and run, it ws perfect.
Yeah, I ran it without the AMG cover and also no Nitrous can on it either. It is just a picture for the thread. Lighten up a litttle. Just having some fun, since my motor is broken...

After seeing the needswings setup that 320dreamer posted, I contacted Rob at needswings to see if a retro kit to the E55 was possible. There are a couple of things that need to be changed to get it to fit, but he is interested in making it for us. Only problem is that he needs a test vehicle in the Detroit area. If anyone is interested PM me or contact Rob at needswings. Its not often we get folks helping out the community especially with a reputation like theirs.

I told him that too since I just wanted a decent "t" to replace the 80mm stock one. He seemed to think there were ways around it and wanted to take a look...

I honestly would love to see a closed hood dyno on this. The stock boxes are actually VERY decent in design. Each box may seem to have their areas of restriction, but they are two boxes with two pretty large air filters going into a single throttle body.
I just don't know what to think of this mod yet.

All these post with theory but noone posting results. I've seen what this cai does first hand and i would be ditching the oem intake or renntech cf as fast as possible.

I was thinking more like this. (SL65 Black)
It could help remove heat and provide an avenue for cooler air. Also I can't see it hurting to wrap the tubes in exhaust wrap.

BTW, I dyno'd my car a few days ago just for kicks and removed the airbox and closed the hood. I lost 30whp across the board. Ouch. Put the airbox back on...gained my 30whp back. So much for putting a filter directly on the TB.

Thats because all you were sucking in was hot engine air.. Stick the filters out by the grill and you should see a positive difference..

I would like to see either dyno or track numbers. Engineers get paid a lot of money to design things and there is a reason they did things the way they are stock... Not saying that these mods won't work, but unless there is something to back it up.... kinda like: no pics = doesn't exist! :-)

The exhaust manifolds are a great example. They are HORRID in flow...but are quiet, tough and cheap. MB got to their target HP with them so why change them? Same goes for everything else.
My E55 is a lot quicker than it was stock, but I had to sacrifice some things that MB can't to make it quicker.
