Replacing Thermostat

Mine is apparently stuck open...so time to change it.

My mechanic says stock temp should be fine.

Any thoughts? And if a lower temp is desired, where to obtain it?

I plan a 168/172 pulley and a Johnson pump in the future.

Other than that, nothing too crazy, it's a DD from April till November.

TIA

Chris

Thanks!

Any other opinions? Would this also decrease inlet air temps since the cooling/intercooler is a shared system, right?

Thanks AK. What is the stock one set at? Is lowering the opening point a good mod on a daily driver?

How do I locate Skratch?

Thanks again

my car never goes over 185d in the winter and its on stock therma in the summer it will hit 205-210 and you cant put your hand on the blower for more than a second.

does that story have a blower sitting under the hood of a car baking at 270 d? or blowing 180d intake air temps down its throat?

cooling our cars make HUGE POWER,to the point of 20-40whp in colder temps.

I trap 122-123 in the winter and 114-116 in the summer, must have somthing to do with colder temps dont cha think lol

as you know our cars have engine coolant running threw the blower and engine heat transfers over and is the reason everyone splits the blower coolant from the engine coolant.

Sounds to me like a coolant split is the answer and keeping the engine temp where Benz put it would be the ultimate solution. The open stat was actually diagnosed through a trouble code set last spring for "low coolant temp" but I haven't seen it since.

Great subthread writeup referencing Smokey, I think he knows a thing or two!

Thanks again guys!

Awol - nice finally catching up!

Jason @ Black Forest has come highly recommended, and has been quite cool to deal with so far. Any thoughts?

We will have to get together sometime, besides on 33 @ 90mph!

PM contact info if you like.

Anyone else? I'm starting to lean towards keeping the stock thermostat and splitting the coolant circuits, and getting the blower coolant as chilly as possible....

That Smokey Yunik repost makes a lot of sense to me.

Opinions?

At the time, Eurocharged tune, VRP shorty headers, and ground down the stock throttlebody.

I just dyno'd 483 whp today back on the stock headers.

Awol - nicely done. Why did you go back to the stock headers, and what did you do with the shorty?? You made 483 whp with basically a tune and throttle body? Wow! Really?!

Where did you dyno?

John Donovan's shop. Join nyspeed.com, he's a good guy and an advertiser on there. I sold the stock headers because I listed the car for sale. I figured if I do a trade in, the dealer wont care, so I might as well part out what I can.

They're going to a good home.

Yes, I was shocked with the numbers. I was figuring ~440, but 483 whp was really great.

Dude- are you selling your car?

"I sold the stock headers because I listed the car for sale."
"I figured if I do a trade in, the dealer wont care, so I might as well part out what I can."- ok -

But - you also said,

"I just dyno'd 483 whp today back on the stock headers. "

So what headers are where? lol

So, curious for your formula, I asked about 11's on a stock pulley.

"At the time, Eurocharged tune, VRP shorty headers, and ground down the stock throttlebody."

That's why I'm curious what headers are where!

What did you find in the throttle body and "ground down"? Or did you buy an aftermarket remachined one?

I had to ask.. lol

I listed it for sale, yes. Not really trying to push it too hard, I still love it, but at the right price, I'd let it go.

To clear things up, the VRP headers were on the car when I ran 11.5.

I took them off last week, so Im down on power, but still dyno'd 483. I would probably be over 500 if I still had them.

Search the TB grind, its free and effective in terms of power.

Don't forget that the original air cooled Porsche motors were running cylinder head temps normally around 300-320F driving down the freeway and approaching 400F in race conditions. My 914-6 has a 2.9 liter race motor with 46mm Webers and twin plug heads and makes around 100HP/liter. Liquid coolant temperature is not a reflection of the internal cylinder temps. Get the IAT down as much as possible and keep your standard thermostat.

Damn...I'm surprised you're selling, you must have something even cooler in the works? Who wouldn't want an 11 second luxury car?? lol

Poked around a little for the TB grind, didn't find much except others mentioning they modded theirs...any tips?
