DRs as an everyday tire?

Has anyone used DRs as an everyday tire on their E55? I'm debating on making the drag setup I bought from Evolved8 my primary setup. I don't drive the car daily and never take it out when it rains. It would be nice to have traction at all times.

seems like a waste since you'll actually have less traction unless you're heating them up (read: burnouts) at every stop light. even then you'd still make the meager cornering ability of the e55 even worse. if you really think you need a better tire, you'd be better off going with r compound tires for daily use.

Don't listen to what he said above. I've had mickey thompson drag radials on every car I've had since the tires came out in like 2005ish. They get WAY MORE traction than street tires at every temp. I drove last winter on them and actually had traction for once but these cars are heavy do don't expect to get but maybe 5000 miles out of them and don't even think about driving in a hard rain unless you want to have some fun

I drove on my BFG DR's for about a week, before I went to the track. I can say, after a week, and then about 18 runs down the track(with nice burnout eachtime) they are just about wore the f out. Seemed fine though while there were on. No real issues.

You can do it. They are not as stable since the side walls of the tires are not built the same as a regular street tire. I had them on my 840 rwhp Vette and had them AT GREAT SPEED many times with no troubles.

Nitto makes a good DR. I run Nitto Invos on my E now.

My hood badge is from ebay and is the AMG crest. I think I paid like $20 for it.

Not to start a spitting match but I 100% disagree with you.

I run DR on my turbo truck and while traction is not 100%, it is 100% better than with plain old radials.

I ran my 72 Dodge Challenger either on slicks or DR on the street for almost 20 years with the same results.

But even with the "limited" driving of both of those vehicles, I was replacing tires every year.

no worries about a pissing match, i'm not offended that you have a differing opinion.

i can concede tha dr's will offer better straight line traction when warm but let me understand...you disagree that dr's will sacrifice cornering ability, and you think dr's are a better all around street tire than something like toyo r888's?

i could be wrong but something tells me you guys possibly haven't run r compound tires before...

chriomikey: To be honest, I can't offer any fair opinion on anything but straight line performance. A 72 Dodge Challenger and 94 Dodge Dakota are not made to corner!

Yea that 60ft is called bad track prep. I've had R-compound tires and would use drag radials over them any day. There's a reason the rubber compound is softer and stickier with drag radials. I've cornered harder and faster on a set of 275/40-17 than on 315 r compound tires so yea I know what I'm talking about.

This coming from a guy that thinks you have to do a burnout at every light to get traction. Try driving with them for awhile and you will see your wrong. They have more traction cold than any street tire and R compound tires are worse than street tires when cold.

i have zero need to run my 16" 50 series dr's on the street when my street tires have not once let me down...not even at the track. and i totally agree, ANY tire that's designed to be operated at a temp higher than typically seen on the street will be worse than a street tire...glad we can finally agree on something!

I've run drag radials on daily drivers and have plenty of friends that do as well. They break down in this way going from longest life/least traction to shortest life with the most traction. Nitto - BFG's - M/T's

I run DR's on my Cobra replica and '68' Camaro full time and have for years. They don't get driven much but get abused when I do and I still get two years out of a set. Straight line traction is astounding compared to even the best sticky road tire. Cornering however, is another matter. They suck due to very soft sidewalls. But, I couldn't win a race in either do to wheelspin until the DR's. Different story with DR's.

Wouldn't put them on my E55 for daily driving under any circumstance. Wet traction is horrible and they wouldn't last six months.

I used DRs on my old modded Lincoln Mark VIII back in '98. They lasted almost 2 months per pair. The car was also my commutor and was driven 40 highway miles a day in Chicago. Traction was a B!TCH anytime the weather got colder than 50* or if the roads accumulated any moisture. I didn't stoplight race enough to justify using them as dd tires so I switched back to street tires after my second set wore out.

Pictures look SICKKKK Glad you like them. Real world experience Those tires hook on the street FAR better than street tires, Even if they are cold. Rock them! Just dont drive in the rain or you will be sorry! That style wheel sets your car off man!!!
