When I went about buying my first E63 I spent 6 months finding one that had what I wanted and had not been beat like a Thai hooker. I think a lot of these issues a lot of people have with these cars is waiting for them to get affordable price wise which is usually after the first owner has beat it relentlessly until the warranty was up and traded it.

Pretty sure if you gave me a car and said do with it as you will with no fear of paying for anything other than wrecking it regardless of manufacturer whomever got that car after me would have problems. Lots of them.

Glad I took this on. 162k miles

Here’s my broken down IM. Interesting to find an IM gasket marked “m159.” Was it common to have the SLS IM gaskets put on when the dealership serviced these?

Looks like we need a air oil separator, VC gaskets, and throttle Mounting plate... I feel bad for the folks who can’t turn a wrench and pay thousands for this type of work, surprised at how easy the e63 and my e320 cdi have been to work on.

Glad to see this. I'm throwing codes:

P2187 System Too Lean at Idle Bank 1
P2189 System Too Lean at Idle Bank 2
P0171 System Too Lean Bank 1
P0174 System Too Lean Bank 2

I'm thinking about getting the bolts and gasket and doing the job myself, so this encouraged me.

Briandavis06,

Let me know how the catch can goes, and please provide the manufacturer that you purchased yours from. Also please provide some pics of the installation, as I'm interested in purchasing one for myself.

I need more than gasket and bolts

Well, I figured out that I need more than a gasket and bolts, although I will obviously change those out too. I'll have to replace the entire Intake Manifold. The good story is that a forum member here has one that I'm having shipped to me to install. I'm also downloading an online manual so I can get this job done and save a few dollars in the process. I'll keep you guys posted, for sure. I'll probably do a detailed, step by step (similar to yours) DIY.

Just jb weld that sucker and it’ll be alright. The intake manifold is magnesium so welding is a big no no

There is either a recall or service bulletin out on W211 gas tanks, think it goes to 15 years. Our was replaced at >10 yrs old at no cost. Google it (if you can't find anything, ping me and I'll see if I can find the letter from MBUSA on the gas tank.) Engine mounts are a wear item, and amazingly, so is the intake manifold...it technical terms, it just 's**ts the bed', or in layperson terms, warps (as I understand it). Not sure on fuel senders.

P2187 and P0171 codes

Hello everyone,

check engine light just lighted up few days ago. I pulled these two codes P2187 and P0171. Read at another thread that changing intake manifold gasket fixed the problem. Did anyone else have this issue? How much do the parts cost and is it possible to DIY? Is there anything else I need to troubleshoot before I go on to replace the gasket? Or just change the gasket and go from there?

There is a process to confirm it is the intake manifold (something about spraying around the manifold to confirm the leak), then if that is the issue, a new manifold is needed. They warp, as I understand it (one would think metalurgy would be understood by MB after 100+ yrs of making cars, but don't get me started). They are not cheap (I think close to $2K). Be especially careful not to drop anything into the engine! I suspect that was what my dealer did and why a cylinder went "poof" on a dealer test drive, but I could not prove that conclusively. It's a long story over 6+ months. In short, it's why I now drive a BMW 640 and sold my E63 as scrap to a local indy repair shop. Sorry, am still bitter a year later. They are fantastic cars, just wish the dealer, MB USA and MB in Germany were a bit more responsive.
