Those who have working/enabled SBC-S on their cars...

What is your CGW's national variant coding set to?

I changed my E55s CGW to ROW (to disable the impact strip lights), and discovered I now have working SBC-S! And some other nice things.

I could never get it to engage before changing the CGW to Rest of World, but after the change, it started working. (Yes, I did try it several times before the change!)

For the less informed among us, including me, what are SBC-S and SBC-H, and why are they desireable?

Google brought up this......

SBC STOP

The system offers several additional functions besides a new braking behavior, due to its electronic brain: In stop-and-go traffic the vehicle brakes automatically, when the foot is lifted off the accelerator pedal ("Traffic Jam Assist"). It can be engaged under 10 MPH, using the the cruise control lever and switches off automatically at higher speeds. It remains active under 40 MPH. When engaged the instrument cluster indicates "SBC S". One can also activate it on downhill slopes via cruise control, so the car won't speed over the set limit. It was deleted starting with MY 2005.

SBC SOFT STOP

is not yet released, though few people are aware of it since Mercedes advertises it already. It might be released lateron. In city traffic soft-stop supposedly allows soft, jerkless stopping. Not sure if it's needed since SBC brakes can be modulated well, with good feel.

SBC HOLD

A "drive-away assistant" prevents the vehicle from rolling backwards or forward when starting on a hill or steep incline. A firm push onto the brake pedal, and the car remains stopped, even when taking the foot off the brake pedal, until the driver accelerates and the vehicle begins to roll. When set, the instrument cluster indicates SBC HOLD. I like using this function and miss it when switching back to other cars. As far as I know it was first introduced in the spring of 2003 in the 04 E-class Estate and lateron in the 2004 SLs.

DRY BRAKE

And finally there is the dry brake function. It is always activated when the windshield wipers run. The system then knows, that it rains and, with short brake pulses unnoticed by the driver, keeps the brake discs always dry and fully functional.

What model year cars do you guys have cos I've been rocking ROW for over a year now and my MY06 will not do neither the Stop nor Hold functions. Only thing I get is the hill assist in C mode.

Read you guys's sigs and noticed you all have pre 05 cars. To my best memory 05 and 06 do not support hold and stop features. Not sure about dry braking though.

Hate to sound n00b but, after switching over to ROW, does SBC-whatever become a selectable option through the cluster or is it part of a sub-menu that is enabled in DAS?

You can't load the torque converter. SBC Hold disengages the moment you touch the gas

Ducati
CGW = Central Gateway and you need an SDS to change the coding.

Just found out today, SBC-S can be enabled on 05+ cars. It is in ESP module not in SBC or CGW as I thought it might be. Also Soft stop option can be enabled also. I like the SBS-S mode, I wonder why they disabled it for 05+ in ROW settings.

Do this at your own risk though .. it is Developer portion only.

Enjoy!

Read post #4 above ... Moosejaw made a nice description of all of the modes. I am happy to be able to enable SBC-S .. good for stop and go traffic which unfortunately is very useful in the Bay area.

What are the menu / drop down names for SBC-S and soft stop in dev mode? Dev mode items are all in German... Thanks.

Interested as well.

Under dev mode on my 06 for the ESP, I tried going to Control unit adaptations (download) > MW-Kodierung (DL_MW_Kodierung) where I found the selections were all set to not active but got a communication error when I tried to change them.
Turbo97se, is that where you made the change or you did it through the "Read coding and/or transfer download data to new control unit" ?

I managed to change them in that menu. Initially reads not active, I set them to all active and it worked. When I tried to change them back I got a communication error. They are all set and work well ... I like the SBC-S it is useful for sure but doesn't help with fuel consumption ... at least I have the choice now

*EDIT* I tried it again just now and I can set them ... Not sure why it is not consistent. This is why I put the warning to do this at your own risk ... I have them all set now. I have not tried the softstopp function yet to see how well it performs ..

Here is a screenshot of them all set:

Usually 704 and 706 are not active and in the USA 703 is not active either.

Turbo97se:
Thanks to your instructions I succeeded in setting everything to 'activ' in Dev mode and confirmed that the settings took exactly like your screen shot.

But how to enable soft stop and auto stop while driving? Tried pushing/pulling/ holding the cruise control stalk while going a few mph like some have described to no avail. Thanks
