URGENT: NHTSA Opens investigation into fuel leaks on the E55.
it is almost the middle of november 2012 and Just as many other people on this thread, I have dicovered a hairline crack on the plastic cap of fuel sending unit of my '06 E55 AMG. Fuel is accumulating on top of it and soaking the padding beneath the rear seat driver's side. Needless to say, the cabin smell of fuel vapors is VERY strong as well. I'm planning to take the car to the dealer (I'm in So Cal) today and see what will they say regarding the cost of repair. My position is that this should be addressed by MBUSA since it is a safety issue but I'm open to hear what they tell me. I'll post back on developments regarding this issue.
Thanks to all other people posting to help resolve this matter.
By the way, I have filed a complaint as well with the NHTSA since I believe MBUSA should be more proactive in the resolution of this problem.
Cheers

Please post your ODI# or send it to me via PMs.... and I will add you to the master list.

Autoblog has posted several NHTSA investigations this past few weeks on its website, but nothing of our plight since my email to that websites editor. I want to say there were at least four articles on the NHTSA.
The Best of Mercedes & AMG
The masterlist is now updated with a total of 54 official ODI#s filed with NHTSA for the E55. Nice work everyone!
There are at least a few more MBWorld regulars that can help us get that number to 60.

Please file a claim, or if you've already done it please PM me with the ODI# and I will update the list. This stuff really does matter.
I went though the EPC-NET system again and was able to update some of the part numbers to match up with parts that people are showing on their repair invoices... specifically Item #40 and #55 items.

I don't have a full understanding of how a dealership selects which part to use based on the chassis number of the car being serviced, or if there are considerations based on the fuel tank part number in the car.... that part still needs more work on my part.

You would have to cross Xplosive off the list as he is in Vancouver Eh?????
But i believe he bought his car in the states................Eh?

Greatest Canadian Movie Ever^^^^^^ Cdn version of a superhero

I HOPE THEY MAKE EM RECALL THESES PARTS. THIS DON'T MAKE NO SINCE! MERCEDES ARE SUPPOSE TO BE SOME OF THE BEST ENGINEER/DESIGNERS IN THE WORLD. THEY LET SOMETHING LIKE FUEL LEAK IN AND OUT OF THE CAR?! NO SENSE, I SAY, NO SENSE!
As of today, the official number of E55 filings with NHTSA is 59.
That's a much stronger case than we had originally (with only 20 ODI#s listed on the original NHTSA complaint to MBUSA), so I think we are helping to build a strong case that this fuel leak is serious and requires real attention from MBZ to resolve it.

I'll admit, I don't know enough about how to read this data to draw any conclusions, but this information shows the progression of fuel tank, and fuel sender designs from the earliest 2003 E55 to the last ones built as 2006 units.
What is interesting is that there are "cutover" dates and specific chassis numbers where they deliberately started using new combinations of fuel tanks AND fuel sending units. Presumably this was in response to customer or dealer complaints of fuel leaks early on....
Does anyone know what the values in the square brackets represent in EPC? [009], [008] etc?
It appears that the "Model Year" numbers are the codes for what the car will be sold as in the US. 806 = 2006 model year, 805 = 2005 model year, etc. Since many cars are built in the calendar year prior to their model year, this allows them to track both ways... by build date AND model year.
Code 494 = ??? still a mystery to me. Anyone know what this means in EPC?
