Cat or No Cat

Installing my headers today.. was wondering what everyones opinions are.

Should i delete my cats?

1.I don't want to delete the cats if there is no gain in power just gain in sound.

2. Delete both cats and x-pipe it. Is it really that much gain in power?

3. I don't want it to be obnoxiously loud.

Please help grandmaster W211 owners

If you have a E55 or E63 removing your cats will make a big difference. Bigger on the E55 because of forced induction. A lot of people delete their primaries and keep the secondaries to keep the noise down. For me I would just have an x-pipe where the resonator should be and just remove all cats. It would sound amazing.

E55

yea i have a 2006 E55..

Im leaning more towards removing the cat, but was gonna keep the secondary and resonator.. i know it sounds good just stupid loud.

E55's are pretty tame just cruising with all cats removed. Its when they are under WOT they make a crazy loud noise. Even then it just sounds tough, never annoying

I have high flow cats, an x-pipe into the stock resonator and its pretty mild until WOT. What headers are you going with? LT or Shorties? That will make a big difference.

i just ordered the ARH headers and mids with x for my E63.i was told by more than one tuner to remove all cats for the best gains.i was also told to keep the resonator.i can't really comment from experience yet,but i trust the guys that helped me decide what to get.

the tuner can completely remove the CEL with the header tune is also what i am told.

as far as labor,i'm guessing 6 hrs,but i don't know for sure.

i had a tune done to the car and felt the gains, but i believe that the headers will do more for the car the just the tune and in combination even better.

also with no cats, you can run race gas.the only race gas around here is leaded so i haven;t been able to use so far.most tunes for the E63 should be able to adapt the timing to the race gas for better gains,or i might get a 2nd ECU and tune it for straight race gas and pop it in only at the track,so it can't adapt back to cruising around town at all.

I went with 200cell cats as I still need to pass the sniffer in Kalifornia. A little louder and a tad more pull

ok so i got them put on yesterday. damn shop welded it wrong i think got the cats taken off but left the 2nd cats and resonator on sounds good. Eventually ill get an x pipe the problem i think I'm gonna run into is that they did not put any type of flex pipe on it. From some of the ppl i talked to i need a flex pipe since the motor puts out a lot of torque... back to another muffler shop tomorrow... I'm tired of it!!!

I've been told the difference between 200 cell race cats and going catless is only about a 5-10 horsepower difference. Not worth it, in my opinion...

I have Eurocharged LT headers and no cats, no resonator, and NO mufflers. All 3 inch piping with a magnaflow x pipe. Sounds scary!

Build the exhaust in sections where you can go straight pipe for track days and install cats for daily driving.

At least go with some 100 cell cats for non-track days.

I agree, like rotten eggs after they get hot from a good beating, if you remove the cats the exhaust will stink of unspent gasoline...trust me there's a big difference.

Headaches....

So the first shop i took it too, are nothing but a bunch of idiots. Saturday i took it by another shop.
1. The first shop never tightened the o2 sensors so they were rattling
2. they cut the second cats off (come to find out they were clogged)
3. Put a 3 inch xpipe and left the resonator on there

They didn't have any flex pipe as some ppl have recommended. So i need to take it back to them. They did a good job and would def go back to them.

Here are my problems still

1. When i get on it usually at take off it feels like something is hitting the bottom of my car usually right under my feet (or seat) somewhere around there
2. I feel like i have an exhaust leak.
3. Does someone have a sound clip but i feel like it just sounds really wraspy.

Ive spent enough money on this #*$& and would like to get it taken care of. Im new to the E55s so I'm not as knowledgable. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

I know its now 6 years later....but did you pass Ca smog after adding headers, primary/secondary cat deletes? And if you passed, what Smog station did you go to for the "hot smog" test? You can PM me!

Thanks
