I think he was exaggerating a bit. The Dinan stroker kit brand new runs about $53k plus installation

Definitely a huge price tag in terms of power gains. seeing that our cars are only worth about $35-45K now, I'd personally look at cheaper alternatives.

Just another reason why I purchased a 6speed manual though. I'd rather spend $5-7k on mods, than paying for an SMG failure.

LOL he must've
The SMG transmissions on the E60 M5s aren't the most reliable, but I've seen plenty of M5s out there with superchargers now (G-power twincharged and ESS) that have running fairly well. It's almost a 50/50 and you never really know who's next.

thanks for the compliment. I'm still fairly new to the site and joined after my friend with an 08' E63 referred me...
I've been a lurker and got hooked on the E55's power capabilities...INSANE!!!
Here's a run between his beast and mine

Very nice! My neighbor just sent his M5 out to Dinian for the stroker kit, I wonder how much he's paying.
I'm in love with the sound that the V10 makes.

I'm sure it's fun to drive and more reliable but that engine was made for that 7 spd, it's like a manual E55/E63, it just wouldn't be right or an auto E39 M5 it's not how the car's persona is. The 6 spd is probably alot of fun to drive and rare but I'd take the 7 spd anyday. The thing that gives the E60 a chance against the Mercs is the 7 spd allowing great top end consistency.
Yah I agree; definitely some valid points there. If the 7spd was a lot more reliable, I would've went that route. I've heard from a BMW master-tech (good friend of mine) that the 6spd would be a better alternative (more reliable) if I had plans of going F/I in the near future, which I do.
