E55 randomly dies.. another thread
Hey guys- after reading up for a little while I'm trying to narrow this down to something that I may be able to change myself. Any comments would be appreciated!
On 30+ min trips during the last few weeks my '04 will start to lose power, dash lights all come on, and completely die randomly. No CEL. HVAC and radio turn off. If you let it sit for 5 min or so after a few cranks (it will crank this whole time, just not start like there is no fuel) it fires right back up and you can make it a good 10-15 more.
There seems to be a plethora of info here on MBW making me thing it may be the crank position sensor (CPS), intercooler pump, or fuel pump. Is the fact that there is no error code point it to one thing or another?

CPS, fuel filter, fuel pump.
Pour cold water on hot CPS & it should improve.
Check fuel pressure at Schrader valve on the fuel rail. s/b >3.8 bar or 55 psi.

I have no tools to check the fuel pressure unfortunately so it looks like I may just blindly change the CPS.
Update-- 45 mile ride home last night, 90 degrees outside, car died literally in increments from start: 15 miles, 15 miles, 10 miles, and 5 miles which was almost home. 5 min cool down and it started right up.

99.9% of the time it's fuel supply or CPS related. If only when hot it's usually CPS.

I agree with everyone else, sounds exactly like the CPS sensor to me. You can do it yourself. It's pretty "easy" to get to once you take the stuff off above it. There's a DIY thread on it as well. I changed mine out as "preventative maintenance" just so i wouldn't have those weird issues. Good luck.
