Impressions from the last two weeks plasti-dipping my new daily.
So had to get a new daily - picked up a new Pathfinder - problem was - SUV's today are designed for women and that needed to change. Solution - 8 cans of Plasti-Dip. I dipped everything that was chrome (had the front grill painted to color match), the running boards and the wheels and here's what I learned:
1) I like the stuff, but like anything, the more you use it, the better you get with it.
2) 12-14 inches away leaves a nice smooth coat. . .further than that - you'll get a "textured" finish as the rubber is balling up before it hits the surface
3) the overspray is easy to clean off but it's still overspray and feeling that on paint just pisses you off
4) It really will just rip off around the badges and leave letters/numbers perfectly covered.
5) Applying it in the Garage is much, much, much better than doing it outside - even a little wind messes with the spray
6) seems to be durable - power washed it and it didn't come off (but I wasn't trying to make it come off, just wanted to see if going over it would make it come off
7) I think it's a great solution for those who want a matte black grill as I'm pretty sure it won't chip
8) would I use it on the benz? In some applications (I'm actually going to use it on my fog light surrounds since they've already chipped up - I have a gloss black grill so not on that but if I didn't - definitely would - also would could see using it on the chrome accents)
9) I'm really interested in the "clear" plasti-dip - curious to see if it will "gloss" the matte black, or if you could use it as a protectant for painted grills
10) and good Lord does it help to have a friend who has a lift in his garage. . .
Here are the before and after shots:

I tried doing this to my QX56 and the uneven look pissed me off enough I peeled it off. So maybe I'll try again with your tip of 12 to 14" from surface.

Did my grille - and hood vent over 7 mnths ago -- still no problems at all.... I also drove Cross-country.
If you want a shiny finish.. I just used a couple coats of glossy clear coat from a spray can... rust-oleum
