Help please! Car won't start

Guys,

Some of you may know I just picked up an 06 E55 about a month ago and experienced the most bizarre thing last night. I went out somewhere around 10pm, went to park my car. Got out of the car, started walking and noticed I parked a bit crookedly so I went back and fixed it, no problem.

I come back to the car about an hour later, and now it won't start. The car cranks up but then just dies and all the lights on the dash come on. I have an OBDII scanner and no check engine light codes are coming up either. Any ideas? I thought it could be the Crank Position Sensor but wouldn't a CEL come on for that?

UPDATE:

See here

CPS would trigger a CEL. Crank it a couple of time to see if the CEL is triggered.
This may sound stupid but make sure you have gas in the car.

I cranked it like twice and no CEL came on... didn't want to crank it too much in fear of messing something else up. I just put a full tank of gas in yesterday and the meter is still full as well.

That's what I'm leaning towards too now. Would there be signs of the fuel pump wearing out? I find it odd that it would go from working perfectly to being out in an hours worth of time...

My guess would be the CPS, crank position sensor. Let the car cool down and see if it will start.

I should have probably mentioned that I did go to try to start the car this morning and same results.

open the schrader valve on the front of the fuel rail, attach a fuel pressure gauge and check if you have 80psi with the ignition in position 2.

I had a very similar issue before, and about $2,000 later, it was deemed a faulty key. I guess the car thought it was being stolen and immobilized the car. Put the spare key in, and bingo. But of course, MB went and fixed a bunch of crap i didn't know about and stuck me with the bill. figures.

Ha... I wish I could try that but I don't have any other keys...

My 05 E55 AMG now does the same thing. Happened today while I had cruise control on and going 63mph. All of a sudden the car lost all power and turned off while driving. It wouldnt start anymore. The car was towed to a dealership and won't be looked at until Monday night. I let it cool and tried it again and still the same thing. I wonder if it's the fuel pump. I'm unsure if my car has had the recall done.

CPS is likely culprit. Mine didnt throw any codes when it failed.

Yea, I am thinking CPS too. Sometimes they work when there cold, other times they just go out 100%. Its a cheap enough part to replace yourself in the driveway. I believe Brian S did a DYI on it. Lots of people keep spare CP sensors in their glove boxes as well.

Hmm, I just remembered the only strange thing that was weird about the car was the temperature reading was pretty off. When you first get into the car, the instrument cluster displays the ambient temperature. It would be night time, probably 75 degrees, and the display would show in the upper 90s or 100s.

I'm thinking whatever sensor relates to that could have gone bad and essentially told the car it's too hot to start.

Thoughts? Anyways, the dealership has the car now and I'm waiting to hear what they say.

Update from the stealership:

Apparently there was a leak in the fuel pump which caused some gasoline to leak and damaged some connector. They're charging me around $1600 for the whole job and they said parts alone is $750. Any ideas? I'm trying to call up a few Indy shops to see what they can do.

Add another one to the recall?

Mention the NHTSA investigation and see if that knocks off a couple hundred bucks off that quote.

Don't rule out the camshaft position sensor. My car didn't want to turnover so I had a brand new crank position sensor put in.....next morning same issue still there. Called my indy and had the camshaft position sensor replaced and have had 0 starting issues.

I PMed him about this, and it looks like the problem is present here as well.

I just had the same problem and it was my Crank Position Sensor. I ordered the part for 43 bucks and replaced it myself in 45 minutes. The car started right up and I have not had the problem again. The car will cut off while driving, the starter will crank away and the car will not start usually after just driving somewhere. The sensor can go bad after 3-4 years and mine lasted 8 years. Shardul posted a good DYI repair for this issue. It would be well worth it you you to check it out.

I keep a spare CPS in the glove box. Don't leave home without it.
