I've been more and more intrigued as I learn about this car. There's so much love for it out in the automotive world.

Do any one here have one? Are they fun?

No idea how fun it is, but I know when I saw one in person I was pretty underwhelmed with the styling.

I drove my friend's 09 GTR and that car was incredible! However, the car's styling leaves a lot to be desired. IMO the car is just too big and bulky. If they slimmed it down and added some curves it would be more palatable.

The GT-R is huge as stated previously.
Several members here have a GT-R (dont know who has a 2012, but im sure Tgoss does)
Nplamg, Tgoss, Rock, the guy in Tampa that has the Hitman in his avatar (name cant come to mind) AMGFAN...craig reminded me.

Im not really a fan of the car. Styling is not on par with previous GT-Rs, the R32 being my favorite.
The car has a high wasteline, like the ford taurus or 300C.
If you want to upgrade wheels you got to go to 22's.
And its hella expensive to maintain.
Final kicker was I sat passenger on a race course and we got lapped by a FD which is 17 years older.

I drove Tals 2013 GTR with a Alpha 7 package on it, and is not on the same level as the E55. It will hand our cars their *** in every aspect of driving. As for creature comforts, sure it might not be up to par with mercedes, but you can make a couple interior changes like Tal and AMGFAN did, to bring it to a whole new level.

Why are they so expensive to maintain, anymore than our cars?

  • Oil changes aren't cheap at many dealers it's $200.00.
  • Trannny fluid is $70-80 per quart. Dealers charge $700-800 for a trans fluid change.
  • Fluid exchange (trans, fr diff, rr diff) - $1400
  • Brakes are $7000-8000 front and rear retail, although cheaper resourced through the aftermarket.
  • Brake pads = ~$600

Most owners like NPLAMG regularily track their cars as in roadcourse. So factor in more costs.
My freind has one that he used to DD, maintnenace set him back $ 7,000 over two years and he doesnt even track the car. Its a show car.

You could do most of the maintenance yourself but it still wont be cheap

GT500 trap was impressive for being on a concrete run way and struggling to get off the line. That lambo trap speed is crazy though!!!

^All true. I have friends that run their cars on road courses on a regular basis and they spend plenty of money on maintenance. My maintenance has been minimal but I only drive the car on weekends and have been to the 1/4 mile track a couple of times.

It's a fantastic machine but I would never want it as a daily driver. Even later models make a significant amount of mechanical noise and there are plenty of road sounds that filter into the cabin. I'm still amazed at how easy this car is to drive fast even for a guy like me........ who is not delusional about his driving skills.

All points here are true. I work at Nissan and spent over a year and a half in the DPIC dealing with dealerships/tuning shops, and the running costs associated with this car are huge. The 2010+ cars are much improved, 2013 obviously being the best but I can certainly agree with the slab-sided styling comments.

Also, the fact that Nissan logs your activities (they know exactly when and where you track it, FYI) leads to a lot of voided warranties and angry customers. More than once, we've had someone use launch mode at a VHT-prepped drag strip and grenade the transaxle. Of course, we opt out of covering it at that point. You never want to be on the other end of THAT phone call.

Aside from that, it's a technological marvel and a formidable machine on *any* racetrack, curvy or straight. And as Rock mentioned, it makes any driver appear artificially awesome. Which is fine, as long as the GT-R is the only car they ever drive. If they go from a GT-R to a GT3 RS with the same gung-ho attitude, they'll be meeting the wall.

It won't be my daily driver...and yes it is slightly modified. It'll go on the road course on "valet mode"...750awhp on 93octane but with a totally different aero and wheel setup.

All nice cars but I question why some of the cars were chosen. Just an odd variety..

Why a ZL1 Camaro and not a ZR1 Vette?

Why the C63?

The drag race video in the OP is but one test done during the "Best Driver's cars" comparison MT does every year. That's why the BRZ is in the running... because it's actually a blast to drive in spite of its power deficit. The C63 BS ran a very respectable lap time at Laguna Seca.

Notice no Ferrari was in the mix, but in last year's test, the 458 was present.

My brother in law bought a new one in 09, and kept it for just over a year.

Short story: Loved the performance and loved the versatility, but hated that it was "an expensive" Nissan.... They needed a car with AWD so my sister could commute in the snow, and my bro-in-law wanted something sporty (was currently in a 350z). The compromise, an 09 GT-R.

Car did awesome in the snow/ice, but as the miles racked up, the maintenance costs did as well. They were forever com paining that the car was stupid expensive to maintain, especially compared to the 350z.

The GT-R is just too fast, consider it weighs more than the Lamborghini and McLaren and has less power the car is a beast. Give the GT-R 700hp, which wouldn't take much work or money and it would eat both of those ALIVE!! I know the video below is a prepped track but 135mph trap with 585whp is damn impressive.

you realize the p700 kit for the gtr is like $15,000 right? thats a far cry from "Give the GT-R 700hp, which wouldn't take much work or money"

unless you have a money tree in your backyard and if you do then you can just get a lambo and throw the 1500+hp kit on it.... it doesnt cost much more

I have a '13 and I drive it as much as possible. It's been a sad few weeks as the car is out in San Diego finally getting AMS Alpha 9+ turbos and a built bottom end. I can't wait to drive it when I get out there

On pump gas the car put down 681 awhp and 645 awtq yesterday on ACG's Mustang Dyno. Can't wait to see what it'll turn on race gas once we get my Cobb firmware issues sorted

Thanks for the kind words man! The expression on your face when you launched it was fuggin priceless.

They are expensive, but so are women and drug habits. To each their own I suppose.

You can piece together kits for this car well below that and turn 600 awhp on E85. It's an extremely mod friendly platform. Which is why I'm so addicted to it.
