For those of you who don't know exactly how to file a claim with NHTSA here are the steps you need to follow:
Go to: https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/
In the Box called: Vehicle Complaint select "Begin online form"
Add your VIN
Add your Vehicle (Start typing "Mercedes Benz E55" and the list will offer you options to autocomplete your selection, including the year)
Add the "Incident Date"
Add the "Vehicle Mileage"
Add the "Vehicle Speed at time of incident" (I'd say 0 MPH is appropriate for this issue)
In the "Affected Parts" pulldown menu select: Fuel / Proplusion system
Below that is an area for a 1900-character description of the issue. Please reference the NHTSA Action# PE12001 in this area to help connect all of these complaints.
Then add your name and address in the area at the bottom, verify your data and submit your form.
Once you do that, you will get an official ODI# assigned to your case.
Please send that ODI# to me so I can update our masterlist.

Mine actually pushed the gasket out on the cover and leaks in the backseat and gets soaked up by the padding underneath my backseat. I'm sick of this and wish MB would sack up and do something about this. I'll probably never buy another MB due to this.

Dropped off my 4matic to dealer today for gas smell. Service tech was this is common and usually the seal on the driver side unit. Will see what else they replace or just the ds fuel sending unit. Sucks when you fill up and start the car and smell gas right away.

I couldn't agree more! Come on, guys, all it took were 50 complaints in November and December of 2011 for the NHTSA to launch an investigation in January of 2012. That investigation is ongoing, but has appeared to stall out. We need to let the NHTSA and Mercedes know that this issue is still a problem and every day that goes by with it not being fixed is a day that we're in danger. Make the call!! It only takes 10 MINUTES!! 888-327-4236 (x1, 1)

What a joke!
If you look at the recent responses in those attached documents, Mercedes is claiming that the fuel leaks are caused by people overfilling the tank (adding fuel after the shutoff nozzle clicks). What a load of crap!
I have NEVER added fuel past the click, and I'm sure 99% of drivers know enough not to do that either.
Dear NHTSA:
I've got my takeoff parts from this fuel leak repair. If you REALLY want to learn what is causing this fuel leak issue you should study these parts. They are off a 46,000 mile car, (that has been leaking since 36,000 miles!). I will guarantee that the injection molded covers have micro cracks EVERYWHERE and allow fuel to permeate and escape.
