I've been looking at used E55/E63s. I am familiar with the technical differences, but I lack is any experience with maintenance. Comparing just the 2, do I go with the cheaper E55 and pick up comprehensive 3rd party coverage for the same price as the e63? Or is the e63 fairly solid and should I go with a newer car? Any input is welcome. Thanks

Wow, hands down so far. Making my life easy I guess...and here I was even looking at 2008 E63s that are generally $10k more than the reasonably low mile E55s.

I have NAC for my '05 E55. I think the Pinnacle cutoff is 7 years, so you better get it now. If not, the coverage will leave a bunch of stuff out.

good warranty if you get one through carmax, but only 1-2 available country-wide at a time for 55s, about 10 e63s last i checked though

I would vote for E63 because it is faster than e55 (both stock) looks fresher and it is just so much refined compared to e55. E55 is a great car too (love E55 but looks outdated). I think over time the 6.2 NA engine would be considered classic/great. In my mind there is no replacement for displacement

I actually have to agree with phalen...I have had threads and many posts on similar topic and I have looked at many e55 and 63's...I am leaning towards the 63...I like the displacement as well but I would buy the right e55. If planning to mod the car and you want to go faster then the e55 is really a no-brainer. I think for $2k you can get into the mid-high 11's...the 63 will take a boat load of $$$ to get going that fast. I could be a little off on those numbers $$ but this is what I have learned since looking for one.

I have looked at about 5 cars in person and probably spoke to 10 dif people about others (that I decided were a waste of time either bc of price or assumed the cars were junk)...so it is not easy to find a good one for a good price. I know of a few great cars and prices weren't bad tho. PM me your number and I can let you know which cars if you are in the northeast.

if high 11s are the goal the 63 can make it in that range for probably similar $. Someone broke 11.9x stock, I did 12.34 in warm/humid weather, hope to better that saturday afternoon but the forcast is getting warmer and warmer and my tires are a weak link is running a good time. I guess if i break 115+ i'll look at it as a victory.
--but that being said, with a basic tune just adding a little HP and helping the shift points a little, I think most could break 11s with that, if not spending a few more bucks on cheap intake/exhaust mods.

You make a good point about shift points...each 63 that I test drove took a longggggg time to shift...and I mean long! I hit the paddle shifter at like 5k rpms and each time it hits the rev limiter...I mean there is 2k more rpm and it reacts that slowly? I guess a tune would help A LOT!!!

from what I understand part is the tune itself and part is that when you flash it, it resets the throttle adaptations and I "think" transmission adaptations. Still controversial if the 7spds "learn" how you drive, and I really dont think the "sneaky" reset works for us like it does on the 55s, but i do know for a fact I noticed a DEFINITELY different machine after the dealer flashed it with an update after a repair (resetting everything),

and I can show consistently that my 1/4 mile runs usually improve at least a 10th each for the first 3 or so (as the car senses my aggressive driving) then flattens out from that point on as it's in its sweet spot.

I'm selling a clean 2003 E55 on autotrader for just $19995.00 with just over 76K miles. The car is mechanically stock for the exception of a Eurocharged Heat Exchanger and Johnson fuel pump with split cooling. Also, the car has brand new Michelin PS2 tires with less than 200 miles on the tread. Check it out and PM me back if interested. For an E55, my budget is $30k without warranty. Trying to stay under 40k miles. I've been looking at 07/08 E63s in the 35k-39k price point. Trying to stay low mileage.

I would vote for the E55, now if you couldn't cheaply put a 63 front end on them I would vote for the 63. In the end you can make a 55 look like a 63 with more performance for less money.
