I think I am SCREWED

I got the supplies to change my oil the other day, and figured I would do it tonight. First thing I did was remove the oil filter, and it was BAD. Oil looks bad, and there's metal shavings in the filter, on both sides. I put the new filter and o-rings on and ran the engine for a few minutes to see if there were more, and there was. I postponed the oil change to wait for a blackstone labs test kit to come in the mail to have the oil examined. I hope its nothing, but I am worried... Thoughts??

Do you have an extended warranty? Might be wise to purchase one now...

maybe you sucked in a BMW and chewed it up on your last run

just kidding - hope all goes well - maybe just some odd flashing that wore off - the labs will tell you some of the story. Any weird sounds or behavior from the engine?

Would definitely stop driving it until you figure it out. Perhaps its one or more of your bearings going.

No unusual noises? Are you using a MB or Mann filter? Are the shavings magnetic? I've seen plastic before from the dampeners on the timing gears coming apart but metal would be very unusual. Post pix if you can. Hope it's nothing expensive.

About 80 thousand strong miles. Every 5-6K miles usually. This time was about 7500 miles, which I hope didn't just hurt something

Engine runs strong as hell. The only thing I have noticed ONCE about three weeks ago, I was decelerating and it made a weird wah wah wah sound and surged then all was normal.. I don't know

Like I said above, just that one noise, and that's it. Filter is a cloth type Mann filter. Haven't tested to see if they are magnetic, but I will see here tonight hopefully. I tried to take pictures but I cant get quality pics showing it. I will take more.
The shavings are like a yellowish gold color, and vary in size. Most were on the outside of the filter, and some on the inside. There were also some in the canister that holds the filter and assembly.

I really hope I am not down for the count, I will most likely be the first person ever with a fail at 80k on a stock motor...

I have taken some pictures that slightly show the shavings, and started to remove the valve covers, but thought about gaskets.. Can I pull the covers and put them back on with the same gaskets?

You can, but they could possibly leak on the re-install. Is it shavings or tiny flake, possible your rod bearings are on the way out. We have seen that before, replaced them with new units, oil change and problem went away.

A little bit of metal flakes isn't crazy to see. The filter did its job and caught them. We get the oil on our trucks checked out twice a year and cut the filters open and we always see metal flakes. If your car runs good and doesn't make any abnormal noise then its not from the bearings. If you had metal flakes coming from the rod or crank bearings you would know it trust me. Rod bearings will sound like someones in your engine banging on it with a hammer (rod knock)

Sometimes it can start with a very slight tick. Almost like a lifter. But next thing you know it'll develope into a rod knock. Hope tthat's not your case though....

I went ahead and took more pictures, hopefully you can make out the shavings, I barely can, But I got a pic of the biggest one so far, and it is easily visible. First picture is damage to the threads on the oil filter housing, which I have no idea how that could have happened.

This one is of shavings and looks to be dirt in the bottom, I could not get my cameras focus to co-operate, but it is visible.

This one is of the large chunk. It IS indeed magnetic. First is a picture of it, then the second is with lighting showing how big it is.

Here is my oil now compared to new.

The tip of the Qtip was a spec I tried to grab, but it fell apart like dirt. Kind of sandy in the texture of it, and it smells like burnt oil, really bad.

This one shows my current oil filter with about 7500 miles on it (right) next to a brand new filter I ran in the car IDLING, never moved, for about 10 minutes.

And in the meantime, I ordered a few more oil filters, and some parts I needed from autohausaz.com. I plan on running the engine for a while after the oil change, and swapping it out every few hundred miles to make sure nothing more circulates into the engine.
And in the meantime I went ahead and got myself some stuff to do while the Beast is down..

Hopefully this is just some crap that appeared from a weird reaction to the oohss and ahhsss from am amg at WOT... All kidding aside, I am hoping for the best at this point, I already found a 60K mile engine out of a cls55 for under $7,000 in case of the worst scenario.

No noises like that AT all, no ticking, no knocking. I will tear apart my old filter though to see what I find, hopefully nothing. Now that I know that I have no noises described as above, I feel a whole lot better.

EDIT:
Here are some pictures of the oil filter torn apart, it had a LOT LOT LOT of junk on the outside, not so much in the inside.. This is the only way I can show how much on the outside.. Last 4 are filter. First two outside, last two inside of filter.

But seriously guys.. You have to remember that I am only 18.

Hopes just lifted significantly! My tire place just called and told me my wheels will be in today or tomorrow! I really needed that too! Looks like the conversion should be starting shortly..

That doesn't look bad, but it's hard to tell in pics. Drain out some of your fresh oil into a sparkling clean drain pan/ container and take it out in the sun. If there's shavings from a bracing about to fail in it the oil will look like glitter, or metallic paint. Being fresh oil won't matter as long as you've got some run time on it.

I'd bet the pieces are bearings and possibly a piece from a broken ring...Have you done a compression and leak down lately ?

Good luck buddy. Flush some oil through it and do a leak down test. You might also start it and take a long screwdriver and listen to various parts of the engine to hear if anything sounds off. You might need another 55k to listen to to compare if you've never done this before.

Do you think the metal pieces could just be from that weird oil filter damage? There may be other filter damage you haven't found and all of the metal pieces may just be from your filter, which would be the best case scenario.
