What does * mean in the vehicle designation?

What does * mean in the vehicle designation?
I have seen a bunch of Mercedes driving down the road with an * after the vehicle designation on the trunk, like E350*.

Can't find anyone that knows what it means. I have asked sales and parts guys at the dealership and they have no idea what I am talking about.

So, can anyone bring me up to speed on this mystery?
