60min until AAA arrives... FML

So my power steering just took a crap on me... I'm not sure if a line blew or something or if the pump is done. All I know is that I have a puddle of power steering fluid under my car... And horrid whining sound when I turn... Anyone have any advice on A: what could have happend or B: what it will cost to repair. I'm taking it to the dealer which is about 5miles from me. Pumps are a few hundred dollars I assume? ($500-1000)

Can you pop the hood and see where the leak is coming from?

check all the hoses first to make sure you didnt just have a rotted or worn hose....

oem pumps are about $600 but you can get aftermarket ones for around 300 and refurbished ones for less

heres a new one from FCP for $299 and i am sure you can find a 10% coupon off from them somewhere as they are always throwing out 10% off coupon codes like every week lol

easy to replace once you remove the radiator fan shroud assemble... had to do mine the 2 week after i bought the car

Car is fixed, it ended up being a loose connector on the power steering rack hose. i guess it just came loose over time so they retightened the connector refilled the system and everything was back to normal....$208 later.. smh, i could have done that myself.

Hopefully your pump is ok. Usually once those things are ran dry they're done for. The whining noise gone?

It could have been worse. I'd be glad it was a loose connection haha.

I agree, i brought this up to them and they assured me that the pump is fine, it was driven very little once it actually ran dry.. im confident that if they had the chance to make 1000-1500 of me they would have.

The whining noise is 100% gone, everything is back to normal.

I am glad.. trust me lol

What i dont understand is how the fastener just came loose.. especially since i just had the car in for its B service.. i would assume that prior to it actually coming off like it did, that there would be some kind of leakage that would be noticeable during that inspection.

hmm wonder if it was loosened during your B service? And happen to let go/wriggle itself out completely. Well good to see that no new pump was needed.

Should i look into this or just leave it alone? i feel like this all could have been avoided if the tech that last worked on my car had been paying attention... it had to of been leaking.

Was it one of the o rings on the lines attached to the rack? I've seen those just blow out without leaking first. I would think if it was leaking at your b service they would of tried upselling it then. I doubt they sabotaged it. If a tech was found doing that not only would he get fired, he would probably never get another dealer job. Just saying

The service invoice said it was the fastener for the "hose" going to the power steering rack. i wasnt charged for any parts.. o rings.. nothing like that.. just labor, hasmat disposal.. blah blah.. so yeah they really just retightened the fastener

Did you see a leak under your car before the hose blew off? If not, then how would the tech have seen a leak? As the reservoir gets low the pump will get noise. Did you notice a new whine? If not then, you are pissing up a rope trying to blame this on the tech.

Huh well I guess it's better than replacing expensive parts.

Why didn't you have MB roadside tow your car? It's free for life if you tow it to a dealer and have regular servicing done at the dealer. They have changed some rules lately with it, but you should qualify having done your b service.

yeah thats what i said. which is why im curious why it wasnt seen by me or the tech.. more so the tech just because he had his face under my car for close to 7hrs.. call me crazy but those lines don't just slip/pop off randomly. for all i know the fluid that was leaking was collected in the "skid plate" (whatever you call the plastic panels under the car.)

Well, this is my first MB.. and i honestly had no idea that MB provided towing. My service tech asked my the same thing, AAA is quick and easy.. and when you request MB roadside apparently they send out a tech first to look to see if the car is drivable, if it isnt THEN they tow it. which would have just waste more time and irritated me more. The MB road side has a cap which is $150 worth of services per year.. towing.. flat repair.. whatever you call them out for. AAA is just quick and easy and has no monetary cap as long as i dont have to tow my car over 200miles.. and it cost me $120/year
