Drag Racing Paint Protection - which is best?

Hitting the drag strip tomorrow night (Dallas Raceway), and looking for something other than blue painter tape to protect the underside area behind the rear wheel wells. Searching yielded a few things, one called Road Wrap, and another called ICS Race Tape. Since my car is white, I'd prefer either clear or white, but just can't bring myself to slap blue on.

Whadda u guys use?

This place is a joke.
I use nothing, and even with sticky drag radials never had any problems. Just wax the quarters real good so it's easy to clean. Don't be O.C.D. about it..just go and have fun!!

Wouldn't white plasti-dip do the job?

Last few times I've been I just sprayed a light coat of WD40. Wipes clean the next day - but your mufflers and exhaust will stink for a while from the rubber.

I've never used anything before, but could definitely see where it was killing the clearcoat and was very rough down there. Road Wrap seems a good candidate, it's cheap and easy and clear...just not in stock anywhere in time for tomorrow.

Not too familiar with plasti-dip but it sounds a little more permanent than I'm looking for, I just want something for the three odd hours or so.

WD40 sounds interesting, I may look into that if it's clearcoat friendly. To google I go.

The plasti will spray right off with a pressure washer.

I think WD40 would break the rubber down even further into a tar wouldn't it? I've used baby oil and it works ok. Still have a lot of cleanup afterwords though. I'm actually leaning towards using tape next time, dont really care what other people think about it. In the end I'm the one who has to clean up after the fun!!

My car being white, I'm inclined to just go with masking tape, it's not really that sticky if only being used for a few hours... but I may regret those words..

I would be worried about regular masking tape especially with the heat from the exhaust, may get very sticky??

This place is a joke.
Taping your car at the track makes you look like, well, a guy who sits down to pee...

Or the type of person who has 3 sets of floor mats stacked up(yes, I've seen it many times)...that way the carpet is PERFECT for the next buyer!! (while you drove around for 5 years with clear plastic floor mats from Autodrones on your floor)

It's pretty horrible. I can't do blue for sure, but I'll take the hazing from using clear wrap if it means fewer black pockmarks shining through my beautiful white paint. Don't get me wrong, I love a good contrast, but...

I dont care what it would make me look like, the first time I went to the strip my car was absolutely caked with super sticky tar like rubber all over the rear. It took at least 2 hours to get all that off and it was not an easy job. The baby oil made the cleanup a bit easier but still a mess. I think tape would be the easiest cleanup, although I have not tried yet. Do you just go to the track and leave the rubber all over the rear quarters forever as to not look like a guy who sits down to pee?? I'd do it simply to make cleanup easier, that's it.

I'm sitting down to pee right now so I can type this from my phone...

Anyways a good coat of wax makes my car easy to clean up on the lower rear quarters. I think you'll be fine with a good wax and some masking tape... Another trick thing would be using some removeable white vinyl...I have some in flat white (Wife does vinyl graphics)...

It's the elusive white vinyl I'm really after. Not enough time to source any. Guess I'll wax it up nice and hope for the best.

was about to say that. I use Pam on long road trips from DC to Canada for the front of the car, esp when driving at night.

I used PAM once on my truck and it turned into a very big problem-it left a very tacky hard to remove residue.

Sounds like PAM needs to see a doctor for some antibiotics....

Just use the painters tape. It's a dragstrip, not a fashion show.
