Split cooling procedures/instructions...trunk tank necessary?

For those that have split their cooling. What exactly is the process and how difficult is it to do?

What difference did you see your IATs and how does the car drive after the split?

I would think the car's IATs would drop significantly after the split.

Also, how necessary is a trunk tank for an otherwise street car with only a few basic upgrades?

THANK YOU ALL FOR ANY FEEDBACK!

SEARCH....ALL OF THIS HAS BEEN ADDRESSED NUMEROUS TIMES....

Cliff Notes for your lazy a$$

(1) Not hard to do if you can remove and install coolant hoses

(2) Depending on the size of the reservoir you will see IATs of ~15 degrees above ambient when cruising and the biggest improvement will be seen on recovery. Your peak IATs will vary depending on the ambient temperature, your mods, size of reservoir, and amount of boost you are running. That said, my peak IATs are about 30* lower than pre-split and I am using a Ford Cobra reservoir (~ 1 qt.).

(3) A trunk tank is great, especially if you have a killer chiller, but probably not necessary unless you really want to do back to back high speed runs, have your car fully modded, and/or are just looking for every option to get the most out of your car....

BIP sells a kit and there are numerous threads on how to do it yourself (parts needed, pictures, etc.)...

Oh yeah I've read most of them. Do you have a link to the BIP kit? I couldn't find that on their website.

Here is the rear tank kit : https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/...group-buy.html

Just call them about what you are interested in and they will direct you to the right solution....

I got the impression he was asking for a kit for split cooling underhood and not a trunk tank.

Yes he was but I was not about to go searching for the thread that Craig started about the ~$80 under hood kit...I gave him enough information that he should be able to get what he is looking for and if not, well then someone else can help ....

I feel that if you will go clutch soon you need trunk tank to maximize power. I have all but trunk tank for cooling mods.

best cooling mod hands down, I think every supercharged car needs a trunk tank

I agree that it helps a lot, especially if paired with a killer chiller to get the water very cold....For street driving with occasional WOT blasts, a rear tank + KC will ensure low IATs....Another option would be methanol injection too, good for cooling the charge and effectively raising the octane (less prone to knock)....

I have a 2.5 gal under hood tank . It is a FTP tank. Much easier install and not a bunch of hoses running to your trunk. would be easy to add ice to as well. My water is 41 degrees while cruising =)

I was looking at that system too. Id like to see the difference in IAT & recovery time compared with trunk tank.

I love the trunk tank but, Im not convinced that its makes a substantial difference from a engine bay mounted tank.

I wonder if FTP could convert their tanks pump to facilitate water/meth injection instead. I think injection has a more profound influence on intake temps.

when you do a trunk or underhood tank is there a 2nd pump needed or does it run off the same pump as the H/E?

Guys, this is the guy who makes the engine bay and trunk tanks (not FTP) http://dadscustomintercoolertank.com/

....The kits that FTP assembled were not up to my standards....

Donnie at http://dadscustomintercoolertank.com/ makes some really nice stuff.

Regarding pumps, you can run just the Bosch 010 (factory pump) - single pump. If you wanted to flow more (X gals / hr), then you could get a bigger pump, but I actually think that would be worse for the heat transfer using the stock intercooler (guess).

Pros and cons of split system vs adding the trunk tank in series to the existing.

Note on the video post above...you must disconnect the air purge line to the stock reservoir!
Why? When the engine coolant pressurized it will blow through the bleed line then out the BMW reservoir vent. Coolant will be everywhere.
Cap the bleed line and all will be well.

Putting the res in the space in front of the radiator, above the supercharger HE.

Hi,

I've gotten myself one of those EC heat exchangers. First off has anyone had any issues running these inline with the stock on the 010 pump? Search function shows a lot of disagreement.

Secondly the local performance shop I'm getting to install and split the cooling is thinking about fabbing up a res tank to go in the space above the HE in front of the radiator (around where the air intakes are) is there a reason people haven't used this area for a tank? Seems like a good idea to me out of the way of the engine bay heat..

Cheers,
PieRat

No issues but the above video is a waste no need cutting anything
and is different from the E 55/63 this is how I did it and never had any issues.
Bought another tank tough
only need these parts and removed Fan shroud first save yourself some cutting and remove the stock clamps (buy a clamp remover)
Where it says cap just remove the clamps nd plug the T then attach the reducer and hose and run up to your tank

Third and last picture is for trunk tank. I never do what he did on the video, not sure what the purpose but is different in the W211 that's for sure but it seems not many realize it no idea why

seems like "in front of the radiator" isn't the best idea. Radiator has a job, blocking air flow directly conflicts with said job. I have gotten temps up on my E55 dicking around on some steep switch backs in the mountains of cinque terrea with lots of gas, brakes, gas where my speed never got very high, thus not much airflow. The heat build up essentially over ran my fans ability to pass enough air through my radiator, It's a pretty specific condition that you might not encounter often but it only takes once.

Personally I wouldn't block my radiator.
