FTP heat exchanger install

I picked up a used (new) FTP heat exchanger here a while back, finally did the install today, have it in place, but have a couple issues, first I need to get a new hose for the pump to intercooler short hose, as mine does not seem to line up. Second, the holes on the mounting tab on the passenger side need redrilled as it sits a little crooked. But here is the big question:
As on the Eurocharged ones, people have needed to find a way to mount the oil cooler to the bottom of the intercooler. I did a search and found that on the EC one people are just drilling holes in the bottom of the intercooler and mounting it there. Has anyone done this on the FTP intercooler? I would like some input on the holes as with my luck I will drill through a line in the intercooler and make it leak.

we ziptied the oil cooler to the bottom - it will bulge a little on the E55 front end - gives the E55 a 'fat lip'

if you have an E63 front end, it's much more docile

I would think that if a person only went through the lower outer panel with a short self tapping screw that would also work, that way it would not go too far in and puncture one of the cores

I was under the impression that the FTP H/E used a bar and plate intercooler core, unlike the Eurocharged H/E. I think if you drill that think you'll be puncturing it. Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

I was thinking of only going through the lower housing maybe sending it only though the piece circled in red in this pic. I would think that the outer housing would not have a coolant line in it, but I could be wrong, and need to figure it out before drilling. I am trying to avoid the classic "fat lip" that the E55's get with this cooler and the bigger hear exchanger. I could always try to mount the oil cooler behind the heat exchanger too. home in a few days, might have to spend time under the car thinking.

So i may have another idea. I think I am going to weld the oem oil cooler tabs to the new heat exchanger. Now its just a matter of how far back to weld it

If you get those mounting tabs installed, good luck getting the air guide back in.

maybe use some Aluminum Exoxy? although, not sure if you want it 'solid' on the bottom

I used JB Weld on mine. Did not feel comfortable drilling holes and wanted something more substantial than zip ties.

How did the JB weld work? thought about using that with roughing up the metal a little before hand to get a little more "grip" for the JB Weld

I did the same thing, lightly sanded both surfaces, applied JB weld, put a floor jack under the oil cooler (separated by a towel) to keep pressure on the assembly and let it cure overnight.

so i'm curious- in the event that either the oil cooler or H/E would fail - how hard would it be to separate the two?

My plan is to either use JB weld or regular welding to just weld on the tabs that were being used to hold the oil cooler on the stock IC, they were held on with rivets (4 per side) on the stock one, so it I drill those out, mount them on the FTP IC, then it should bolt right back up but still be removable should the need arise.

LOL - well you may or may not know, but my lower lip bit off part of my undertray... so hopefully you don't hit any unsuspecting bumps

So I ended up using two long zip ties to hold the oil cooler in place while I put the screws in that hold the lower carter plate up. The zip ties take some of the weight off the plate. Also ended up making a second set of steel support brackets that also hold the oil cooler up which run from it up to the bumper support and use the same bolts as the heat exchanger. It actually looks really nice since the supports I made up are hidden by the factory bumper. As Toadster said, trimming a little off the bottom of the E55's bumper helped a lot too. I was also planning on replacing my ic pump with a Bosch 010 pump. I ended up ordering one, then found out that my car (2006 E55) already had one, guess I have a spare now. Also got the front shifters for my 9500ci done since I had the bumper taken off. Once I get the radar sensor done, then its all wired up and ready for my midcity 9500ci interface. Should be pretty cool when its all done.
