Sh*t happens?

With $9K+ invested in engine performance mods and weeks of man hours spent, I crack #8 piston on a test run with @56,000 miles on the clock? Really? Having all intentions on taking the 55K mile speed record, I trash the engine 2 weeks before the race. At least I didn't pay for everything in advance and promised my kids the race. Oh, wait.........

Sorry to hear that! The mileage is irrelevant though. A lean condition will crack a 1500 mile piston in the same exact fashion as a 150,000 mile one. Hopefully you get back rolling soon man.

It wasn't lean? The piston rings cracked and there was a hair line crack on the side of the piston. I have seen lean conditions damage before, this is not the reason.....multiple techs at Grapevine Mercedes said no signs of detenation/lean mixture present. (Cylinder wall has very little to no damage) Loss of power on high boost mixed with oil blow by was the symptoms I experienced. No knocking, no CEL with smooth acceleration and plenty of power at low and mid range.

The actual ring cracked without taking out the upper ringland of the piston? It either got way too hot or it was lean at one point , one of those two. THat condition can cause the ring to expand too much, butting the ends together and causing the rest of the ring to bind in its groove which will then drop out the compression out of that hole until it cools off.

I'm interested to see what your techs find/think.

Also, sent you a Pm let me know if I can help.

Terrible terrible news... Sorry to hear that.

Sounds like detonation... If it wasn't heat related. Hard detonation can be like a striking the top of the piston with a hammer.

Damn, worse timing bro! At least you have minimum engine damage.

I suggest you install these forged stock replacements..

Bad injector on that hole? May be worth checking.

The reason i ask is because i had an eerily similar experience with a boosted SBF. Ended up being a bad injector that only malfunctioned when at full pulse width with boosted fuel pressure. It caused that hole to detonate. It too had no real signs of a lean condition, it just cracked the piston between the top and second ring land.
Sorry for the bad luck. It sucks to have so much time and money invested only to have a mystery problem bring it to an abrupt hault.
