Cooling the Beast

Car is a stock right hand drive with the only other mod being an ELM.
There have been a few front tank mods on this forum before this one being a little bit different.
Currently the tank is out and further mods being carried out to improve flow rates so its very much still in the fabrication and testing stage.

AC lines connected to the tank feeding a HE coil inside the tank, you can just about see the in/out connections on the left side of the tank.

Ahh.. A homemade killer chiller, interesting. Are you still running the heat exchanger up front?

Removed the stock HE and upgraded to an EC HE, system has 2 cm30 pumps, supply and return lines are fitted on the underside of the tank with hoses running behind front left wheel arch cover.

Cooling mods complete, so now have front tank fitted with homemade KC with data logs taken stock, with Eurocharged HE and new pump, and then system split and tank fitted.

All info on this link.

Are you data logging? What sort of IATs are you seeing with your setup? What are the ambient temps? We are closing in on winter time here and I'm not too concerned with temps now haha, but will start doing more cooling stuff once Spring rolls around next year.

Looks promising, nice work!

Hi yes using an android tablet with torque app and ELM bluetooth module, i have created charts on the link above, ambient temps over here today only 7c highest IAT today after repeated WOT runs hit the highest at 28c, more importantly are how fast the numbers drop.

Ginger, great stuff! I didn't click the link yet but will read through it. I am using an Android with the TORQUE app as well and Kiwi bluetooth, works wonderfully!

The recovery is key with these cars. Thanks for the contribution..

Thanks for your comment, and yes the temperature recovery makes all the difference, my indie mechanic who is very well respected on the UK site and who has worked on and test driven many of the 55 models said it now feels like it already has a pulley and remap, am very happy.

So what were your max. IATs with the new Setup? Is it the red line in the attachment of your post from today in the UK Forums?
Strange, my car reached 60°C after the second pull from 100kph to 240+ kph. Completely Stock (my guess at least)

Yes the car is stock and yes the red line is the measured IAT, the blue is engine load, the graph is 0 to 100 showing temp 0 to 100 engine load 0 to 100% throttle, easiest way to show it on a graph.

What was your ambient temp to generate 60c?

Just spotted your in Germany so am sure your weather is similar to here in UK, if your hitting 60c then your IC pump may need looking at.

Great work, I want one. and another on the other side, although I think the car might not run very well without the original ecu /fuse box on the other side.

Hi,
this was my post direct at the day of measurement:
https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/...ml#post5823823

So maybe my pump is really about to break. Will upgrade it anyway.

May i also lead you to this gentlemens topic about pumps :
https://mbworld.org/forums/m275-v12-...ion-pumps.html

He has some amazing findings and ideas.

The IAT's recorded on my car show what can happen and that's stock, with an FSP fitted you are putting even more stress and heat on the engine, what you described in your other thread is what happened to me the temps just do not recover, if you look at my link and the first post you see the temps carry on going up and up, until the supercharger clutch disengages, now you end up with a very hot supercharger, and the only way to cool it is to get more air through it but the ECU will not allow it obviously to protect the engine.

Forgot to mention you really need a major cooling upgrade before using the FSP and continuous monitoring of IAT's, you have no protection i.e. your supercharger cannot disengage.

I see what you mean, for all the guys on the US forum with LHD cars it just means extending the AC lines across to the other side where the filter box would sit.

Call Olly at PCS if your interested, well worth it as this is the best way for anyone to start modding these cars, the cooling will always catch you out.

As an update to this thread have now fitted a Eurocharged pulley and map, my thread across the pond has all the data logging graphs showing improvements from a stock set up to the pulley upgrade.
http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/amg-p...g-upgrade.html

The final graphs showing the extra temperature gains on a WOT run after the upgrade.

For those with RHD and interested this is the thread from Olly at PCS the designer and installer of the system.

sorry guys, thought you could see them on the other forum, will start posting up data logging graphs

This is stock after repeated WOT, blue throttle position, red IAT.

IC pump not very good leading to supercharger clutch disengage.

This is an overlay of the difference between the 1st stage upgrade and the addition of a split and tank.

series 1 and 2 split and tank.

series 3 and 4 1st stage upgrade.

Both graphs taken from first WOT as there are to many variables to try to compare both

This graph is taken after a pulley and map upgrade, and after an 11 second rolling WOT, the peak temperatures have returned to the levels of the 1st stage upgrade but the speed and fall of temp recovery is much greater with the split and tank fitted.
