I upgraded mine with a set from eBay. Really pleased with the quality, but I basically had to sacrifice the lights in my old ones. I got in there to get the connector so plugging in the new ones would be easy. Removing the stock mirrors is really simple once you know how. Fold the mirror housing all the way in (push from the front) and then there is a tab that you must release using a flat screwdriver. It takes a bit of pressure and makes a scary loud snap when it releases, but it's fine. Then you can pull the housing out away from the car.
The best mirror mod I did was replace the OEM glass with the Euro OEM glass that has the convex outer part. I always thought visibility was horrible in these cars in regards to the mirrors and their inefficient use of borders. Look how thick and fat the outer part of the driver's mirror glass is! I got the non-auto dimming mirror for both sides (doesn't have the thick black border) and I'd say my viewing area has increased a good 50-70%. I got the glass on eBay from Latvia for like $25 each side. Definitely worth doing as it has reduced the blind spots significantly.
Last thing regarding the mirrors is those freaking gaskets that dry-rot and fall apart. In order to get a gasket, you have to buy the entire mirror assembly. Complete BS and I am waiting for any vendor to fill this need. Lots of aging Benzes out there need these.
I don't have any close-up pics, but I'll see if I have any that show the new mirrors. Vastly superior to the ugly stockers.

I forgot to mention that changing the glass is a little more difficult. As long as you aren't completely brain-dead and pay attention to it when you take it apart, it's not too bad, though.
I might make a quick how-to video of how to remove the mirror.

I don't understand this part. I have facelift mirrors also (heated and dimming) I did not have to sacrifice anything.
Also no one mentioned the fact that you have to drill oversized holes and add fender washers and regular flat washers and different bolts to hold the new mirrors in place. I used the foam piece on the mirror that the wiring goes through as a template to drill the holes.

Ah .. I misread OP's original message.
03-06 is W211 pre-facelift mirrors
07-08 is W211 face-lift mirrors - I did this
08-10 is W212 type mirrors - these are typically mirror cover shells from Ebay

My stock driver's side was auto-dimming and had a really thick border around it. Other side didn't. Both were heated. Maybe the discoloring was due to the heater being stuck "on".
Now that I think about it, when do the defrosting mirrors turn on? There's no switch for it? Is it when you set the climate control to a certain temp? Does it go off the external temp?

Not sure how to tell without taking it apart. The 2007-2008 mirrors have separate plug for mirror glass. When I took apart my original mirror I don't recall seeing the additional plug.
For defrost, I believe they come on when you hit defrost button and/or temperature driven. Now you have me curious enough to try to check.
