Heat Exchanger Upgrade
Hey guys,
I recently got a '06 E55 and drove from Gainesville, FL to Atlanta, GA. I did step on it quite a few times and at one point ended up "racing" a VW R32 just for ****s and giggles. The first few times it pulled hard and left him way far behind but then at one point it felt like there was no power so that's when I thought the supercharger might've gotten hot and the ECU probably shut it off. After a little bit of moderate driving it was all back to normal. That's when I thought that I might need a bigger heat exchanger with higher capacity. Am I about right in my speculation ? Does this happen quite a lot with the stock heat exchanger when the car is "pushed" harder ?
I was looking at a bunch of threads about installing an after market H/E and seems like a lot of thumbs up went for the LET and Code 3 H/E. I also found some info about the PLM one. Unfortunately I wasn't able to find neither LET nor Code 3 H/E anywhere for sale.. just one PLM on ebay.. Anyone know where I can purchase one and which one would you recommend ?

sounds like your h/e pump is failing...
Bosch 010 OEM Mercedes Benz AUXILIARY WATER PUMP (E-Class) - BOSCH 0005000386 $121 shipped
if you're looking for a bigger heat-exchanger itself - lots of threads here... I like my FTP cooler, but Eurocharged offers a similar sized one (both are about 2x the stock cooler size)

It's the pump huh.. I did read the Bosch 010 seems to be better than the Johnson CM30 but I guess they both do a better job than the stock Bosch.
I did find this one $112 shipped.

Do you know if the diameter of the inlet and outlet are the same as the stock ? Meaning would the stock pipes work with it or they would have to be replaced ?

I have the FT-P HE - I've been happy with it, there are lots of options out there.
Eurocharged is similar volume, a little wider where the FTP is a bit taller.

I have the FTP and it's so large that it pushes the bottom of the bumper down. Given the chance to do it again, I'd most likely go with the EuroCharged one.

I've often wondered if there is still a benefit to installing an aftermarket H/E in these cars once you split the cooling system..... ??
From what I've read, the intercooler (under the blower) is the true bottleneck for heat anyway, so once you split the cooling and give it exclusive use of the factory H/E you are doing pretty well. The factory IC just can't transfer heat efficiently, so no matter how much other cooling you throw at the problem the IC will always be the limiting factor.
I've never seen it on this forum, but I'd like to see a comparison between:
1. Stock H/E with split cooling mod
2. Large aftermarket H/E with factory plumbing (non-split cooling)
Obviously, this is for a basically stock E55. I realize that once you start increasing boost (and heat) there really isn't any such thing as "too much" cooling.

After researching, I recently went with the EC exchanger. It's a good product.
Living in FL, I need all the cooling I can get.

I haven't really researched the split cooling mod but while we're at it we can also throw in the trunk tank in the mix but I think those two options have more involved setup compared to H/E upgrade. Of course if you're going all out and want as much boost as you can get like GregMB said there isn't such thing as 'too much' boost. I'm just looking to keep the car fairly stock at least for now but this thing with the constant kompressor cut off is driving me nuts so I think a Bosch 010 pump with either EC or FTP H/E would be sufficient to keep it cool enough so it doesn't shut off.. I'm also in a pretty humid/hot area.. Atlanta gets really sticky in the summer..
With all of that said does the EC h/e require any modification or is it straight plug'n'play ?
EDIT: On their site it looks like the brackets have no wholes in them so I suppose those would have to be drilled but that's a not a biggy. I'm more or less wondering about the bumper and if would have to be cut or anything like that to fit the h/e behind it.

Since you live in Atlanta, you should just head over to BIP.....
They are active on this forum (and a vendor) and can get your car sorted out for you.
It's silly to go it alone when you have a reputable shop within a few minutes drive from you.

the H/E does require some drilling into the car after the bumper is removed. It does not interfere with the stock E55 bumper. If you decide to change to a E63 bumper then you do have to do some slight cutting to the bumper.

Well I'm not so worried about the installation and all of that cause I've also got a couple friends that work at RBM of Atlanta and another Merc certified shop so the installation will be done at either place. I was more than less hunting for a good quality oem fit h/e. I know those guys do tuning and whatnot but I want to be involved in modifying the car as much as I can rather than just dropping it off at a tuner and picking it up later with 200 hp more.. You know what I mean ? But hey that's personal thing anyways. I'm sure they're good and they're like a mile from where I live so I might just stop by and see what they've got to offer. Good info !
But for now I don't really want to get any more hp than it already has.. it was quite a big jump for me from the ZHP and I want to get used to the cornering power before I add any more.. that's how people get in trouble o.O
