E-brake does not hold the car

E-brake does not hold the car
Pedal is depressed without much resistance and the light goes on, but the car freely rolls in neutral.
Is this a simple fix with "tightening the cables," or is something more extensive at work?

You should remove the rear calipers and rotors and inspect the linings and hardware for the parking brake shoes. Also make sure the cable is attached to the brake actuator in the brake shoe mechanism. The parking brake on our cars are a drum in hat system meaning all friction for the park brake is inside the hat of the rear rotors. If the rotor comes off on the rear with very little or no drag or resistance, you may need to adjust the ahoes. There will be an adjuster wheel in the hardware you can turn to expand the shoes to take up the slack you are experiencing.

well, mine did the same. On inspection of the brake shoes, the material had completely worn off/broke away from the shoe itself leaving no friction. Of course it could be the cable but I doubt it. You really need to take it apart and see whats going on.
