Oil Catch Can

2005 E55
I have my valve covers off and getting powder coated. am changing plugs and wires. and now I am reading older posts and DIYs talking about oil catch cans. I have read the DIY but don't really follow it. Is there a need for a catch can? I know it takes atomized oil out, and prevents it from going into the intake, but if this is necessary, why was it not a factory part? will a catch can have any affect on preventing the valve covers from leaking again? any help or a quick catch can 101 session would be tremendously appreciated

im buying the suspension air compressor from FCP Euro and they have these catch cans. are these any good?

Oil effectively lowers octane, and dirties the intake tract.

Take your intake off and look at the amount of oil in it and int he runners. If you are ok with that, then don't put an oil catch can in. I for one use the one with the sight tube so you can see when the level goes up. Also, i added a on / off valve at the bottom so all i have to do to empty it is to turn the valve 90 degrees.

You don't need one, but do you want one? Your call.......

For me, one has usually ended up on any forced induction car I've owned. Some people like them, some people don't. It's certainly not hurting anything by having it.

See this post for instructions: https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/195128-oil-catch-can-installation.html#post2316610
The Weistec product is quite nice, but very expensive. Once you take out the oil breather hose, you can apply heat to the "PCV" hose and gently pry it apart from the actual valve. Then you can insert the Oil Catch can in series with the hose you just took apart. Given that they do occasionally fail, this is a good time to get a new oil breather hose and replace the old one.

Catch can is an awesome, inexpensive mod. I've got one on my Jeep SRT8 and it has a significant amount of nasty oil in it every time I do an oil change. Not necessary but helps keep things clean! When in doubt, and for a low amount of $$, do it! Certainly won't hurt!
