Preliminary Snow Experience
Well the snow was significant here in the NYC area. My drive home Fri afternoon with the stock Conti's was significantly better than expected. Did not get stuck, lost traction slightly but still able to maintain control between the manhattan leg and the bronx leg of the triborough bridge.
Sat am put on my snows - 18 x 8 all around Dunlop M3's. No problem on semi-cleared roads. There was a bank parking lot unplowed Sun AM - this had a fair grade and I had no problem. Obviously I did not push it, but the car handled fine with no traction loss.
How about others experiences ?

It's a W211 E55. I'm using the 18 " AMG double spoke (identical to the front stock wheels). The knock-off wheels that Tirerack had really looked bad - so what the he**.

Had no problems with Dunlop M2's
Mounted on OEM wheels they worked well on hard packed snow and ice as well as several inches. Of course stupidity can overcome any good product as many awd drivers found out this past weekend.

The E55 is no different from any other RW drive sports sedan when it comes to snow or ice....they are not very good in many situations. In fact I would suspect that the E55 with it's additional torque is very unhappy on slippery ground.
Winter traction is more an issue of tire than of the car wearing them. Sport tires generally are designed for dry tractable surfaces and snow and summeer tires do not a happy couple make.

Yes I did manage on the stock Conti's, but that's just it - managed - the next AM I had my snows put on. They handle well in the snow, but not with the same traction on dry asphalt.
Spring will be back soon (I hope).
