Little run with E60 M5

I had a little run with an e60 M5 the other day in Mexico. I was in front of him around 7xmph in the same lane and we punched (believe) at the same time for about 10 seconds. I did not pay attention which gear I was in. I did not really pull or lose. We very much kept the same distance for about 5 sec then I felt I slowly pulled a tiny tiny bit from my rear mirror for the last couple seconds before I slowed down due to traffic, but not much to claim. We both gave thumb up and took the same exist. So with my mods in my sig (the only mod keeps me slow is 20” heavy wheel) and I am not sure if he was modded or not.

1) Is this what we expect to see?
2) The M5 was modded.
3) I should have won with my mods unless something was wrong with my car
4) The M5 should have won.

If you have experience, please share

I'm guessing your car didn't kick down into a lower gear, happens to me sometimes. I just have a 185mm cp, ecu/tcu tune and I pulled my buddies E60 M5 pretty bad from a 60 roll. With your mod list you should have walked him.

Thank you guys

yeah, I was expecting pulling on him but it didn't really happen that obvious . Maybe I was in a wrong gear.

Around 200 km/h is where e60 v10 comes online.

Stock E55 vs Stock M5 V10, the E55 slightly starts to pull away towards 110+. 2 runs, he gave me the jump both times, and he hit pretty good too. After 2 he didn't want any more, still have another passenger in the car didn't even make a difference.

Too many variables and unknowns. The E60 has little low end torque but really comes alive in the upper RPMS. The E55 has the advantage with it's low end torque but runs out of steam at the top. My M5 had full headers, exhaust, no cats, Euro software, and a Dinan rear end, and reved safely to 8750 rpms and above 130mph very few cars would pull away from me. The cars are very different and each has its strengths. In the end, I kept the E63 as my daily driver and sold the E60 for the Porsche GT2.

E55
I own both. Stock for stock the E55 will pull on the M5. The E55 won't blow the M5 away, however the amount of torque the E55 has makes it feel much, much faster off the line. The M5 is sluggish until you hit 5,000RPM+. The E55 is peppy at any RPM.

On the highway, it's the same story as before. The M5 doesn't put you in the seat like the E55, however it does pick up speed very quickly.

0-60 - E55 will pull (1-1.5 car lengths). The M5 has trouble producing the torque and the single clutch transmission just doesn't allow seemless power like the automatic E55

60-120 - Nose to Nose, E55 jumps ahead until 100+, then the M5 will hang on and not loose any distance. The E55 just develops more torque, and doesn't have to cut throttle input to shift. If you short shift the M5, you've already lost. It's redline, or your better half rolls her eyes as your horrifically loud and bumpy car looses to a "Mercedes".

120+ - Both cars equally fast. I really haven't done any high speed pulls in either. I like my drivers liscence and AMP (race track) is too short to really wind either of them out.

In the end, the E55 is cheaper to run, cheaper to maintain, cheaper to upgrade, etc...

The transmission in the M5 makes it more fun to drive than the E55. The sound, handling and braking of the M5 is years ahead of the E55. The acceleration, design, and ease of use makes the E55 a proper daily driver sleeper. It's more refined on all aspects. The Mercedes is a car you pile the family into and go to dinner in, then smoke a Corvette or pasta rocket while maintaining total comfort. The M5 is a car you get in, pop your collar, put on your mirrored shades, and a energy drink and go **** off the entire city as you zoom around in a puddle of your own feces.

E55 is my pick. No matter how I am feeling.

You hit the nail on the head . I was looking into E60 M5s but a BM tech I knew told me about oil pump chain's snapping. Another dealer I know purchased an E60M5 and they ended up snapping the chain somehow (burnouts and donuts). This combined with E46 vanos issues I know about, really cemented my purchase of the E55. I even considered an E39 M5 after I got in the amg but I don't regret anything up to this point.

The thing that I love about the E55 is the ability to have "low speed" fun. You can really play around under 40mph. Having big torque at low RPM makes city driving fun. The M5 requirs higher RPM's to have fun, so by the time you get into the "fun speed" your already going to fast you have to immediately back off. Couple that with straight pipes, and you really can't wind it out in the city. Every cop is already looking for you at 4,000RPM.

One of my biggest issues with the E55 is the turn in. You have NO idea where the front end wants to go. There is a noticeable under steer when you dive into a mid-speed corner. 50-70MPH entry speed with little feedback through the wheel, hit the apex and the E55 enters a "numb" feeling where no matter what you do with the wheel it does nothing, then all of a sudden the feedback is there and you are saying "HIIIII!!!" to the person that was once behind you and is now in front of you saying "INSURANCE CLAIM!!!".

Maybe my next project is a W211 engine in a M5...

Fun to read your inputs thank you all

Checking today, I was definitely in 5th gear at 7x mph. What is the best gear for that speed? Does anyone have experience for speed range vs gear?

Thanks,

Blew the engine in my E60 M5 last month. Rod bearings failed, which is common with these engines. Held up fine until I had to replace the VANOS solenoids and then two weeks later, knocking like ****. Sold the car as-is for $11K. As far as which was faster, I would consider my 63 to be faster because as stated earlier, the M5 lacks torque and if you are racing from a stop, the lead you build in the first 1/8 mile is too hard to make up.
