How to double your gas mileage for $33!

This is a legit mod. I have tested it and it does work.

1: Order a Gates 080545HD Belt from Amazon
Amazon.com: Gates K080545HD Micro-V Belt: Automotive Amazon.com: Gates K080545HD Micro-V Belt: Automotive

2: Spend entire afternoon replacing bearings and belts

3: Test drive, shred brand new belt.

4: Wait 3 days for new belt to arrive while in limp mode and watch your MPG's soar since you can't put your foot down.

23.2MPG as of today!

Just kidding...this sucks.

I don't think it's the belt. One of the pulley from the belt wrap kit side is not aligned well?
Sorry and gl

I'm pretty sure my s/c idler pulley does not have an outside lip like that...strange...

Looks like you have the pulley's installed backwards and it's very easy to make that mistake... I did it and after looking it I re-did it the right way... Thanks to Shardul for the pointer

Check this out and the lip on your pulleys and the lip on pic below

I never realized mine had a lip. I thought that was normal. I'll flip it tonight and report back.

Maybe the PO installed the pulleys in, the wrong location ? The new belt lasted 3 days of moderate driving and shredded on the first hard pull (2nd gear, 3K-6K RPM). I do have a older 180mm EC crank pulley with is known to shred belts. The previous belt lasted for 4 months and was pretty chewed up but did not snap like this one.

Looking at other pulleys, maybe I should grind the lip off and make it flat.

Any input on why I shredded a brand new belt 3 days later? I have been searching and can't figure out why my tensioner pulley has a lip on it.

I am running a 180 crank pulley on it right now. Could that be the issue? I plan on going ASP this winter but would like to be able to figure out what is throwing belts. I installed a new one yesterday but I am afraid to put my foot down. I think I shredded it when I let off the gas pedal abruptly around 5,000RPM in 2ND gear

It's possible the belt is too long and when you let off wot the belt slapped from the tensioner and jumps a pulley or other reason is that there is an alignment issue with the pulleys or too much wobble with the crank pulley

How stiff is the spring in your belt tensioner? Does it take a good amount of effort to crank it over with a wrench?

Did your pulleys come with tape/label that said "engine side" on it?

Take a pic from directly above so we can see if something looks out of line. Bertographer might be on to something with a pulley being flipped.

You won't have to machine anything.

I'll snap a picture tonight if I can. The tensioner can be pushed over quite easily with a 6" open end. I may purchase a new one and see if that helps.

tensioner should have more juice than that. My m113 NA tensioner requires a solid push with a 15" torque wrench

It's pretty loose until I put it near the point where I slide the allen key to lock it back.

ill add one observation since ive now owned my e55 for 4 months with and without the belt wrap. I do have a crank pully BTW.... went through countless belts and in the end, for me.. it really was just finding the perfect belt, not to short, not to long.

before the belt wrap kit.. all my probs were resolved going with a goodyear gatorback belt..I forget the exact one, i belive 4080515.. never had a prob again.

After i installed the belt wrap..I once again was shreding belts such as the gates/dayco etc.. and once again that all stopped when I installed a gatorback, this time a 4080545.

I will never buy another belt other than a gatorback. To top it off, that belt cost me 11 bucks on ebay.
Aside from an actual install issue.. look for the recommended length for your specific setup with/if you have pulleys etc, and then buy a gatorback as cloese as possible to the total MM length as you can...i believe mine is 1384mm thats for a 172 mm crank and belt wrap kit
