e55 amg cold air intake system

i am planning on building a cold air intake system similar to the one in the picture, only with aluminum wrapped in heat insulator and increasing the throttle body to 82mm from 74mm stock. air box too, i will have it built.

whats the best air filter i should use for highest performance? and where can i find the item.

i live in georgia, and i ll have to order it online.

and also, if i sacrifice the high beam lamps, will it give me noticeable difference in air flow now with the 82mm tb or is original intake enough?

thanks ...

Cntrline can give some good input on this as he (and I am sure many others) has experimented with this for countless hours. I think he learned that there just isn't a really free flowing air filter for this set up. Others will chime in.

I got my enclosed cone filters from frozenboost.com. The faux carbon fiber housing looks really tacky, but they're inexpensive enough to be disposable.

also, if you leave them on top aren't you really sucking in all the hot air, i would think the stock location/tubes are perfect for sucking in cooler air?

Look at the needswing site, they have a CAI that is pretty good, I have a custom 5" one they made for me after I discovered their 3" system was robbing HP.. I did a custom dyno tune with Jerry and we pulled the initial 3" filters out and I gained 16 whp on one and 18 on the other run, thats when I had them make a 5" system.. 495 whp seems to be the break point for their 3" system.. I dynoed out at 566 whp with the 5" on a mustang...

Let me see what I can do.. Keep in mind it's only the canisters that are 5" if you look at their site.. 1st model was 3" thru.. Spectre filters.. Using a TTM 82 polished/ported TB.. It was a new CLS 550 TB...

I have seen these similar gains first hand on my buddies car but we did it gauges car lengths and I would swear that it could me even more than this! I think he has a bigger tb though, I believe a 90mm. He has 5" middle tubes getting air from the grill. Someone mentioned about the setup where the air comes from the engine compartment...yeah, that doesn't look too efficient.
