Can you remove seats without malfunction?
I'm gonna be taking the seats out of my car and some other electronics in the interior as part of my interior disassembly. Can I still turn it on or do I have to disconnect the battery. I know I'd get some kind of malfunction or warning in the cluster but does that need STAR or whatever to clear or would that clear as soon as I put everything back in?

thats correct. whenever the seats "srs" are disconnected, you will need star to reset. otherwise the "srs" lights will remain on the cluster. only way to clear it is thru star.

Damn it!! Why?!! This is what I hate about German cars. They add complexity for the sake of complexity. ***holes!!
OK, so will I need to disconnect the battery or just not put the key in....

honestly....doesnt matter
doesnt really matter. most people will not disconnect the battery because you will need to move the seats all way back to get to the front bolts, then move the seats all the way up (forward) to get to the back floor bolts. and the connectors are taken right off to remove the seats from the car with the seat part worked its way out first. my personal problem: i dont have any power to my passenger seat at all. been trying to sort out how to get to the actual bolts in the bottom back has been a PITA!!!! for now, i am just living with no seat adjustment to the passenger side.

You should always discount the battery and ground yourself when working with any airbag system. Most all cars will set and srs fault if the airbag is unplugged while the system has power and all srs systems require a slightly advanced tool to clear faults.

did some digging around and would agree with the above posts. some members either disconnected the main battery and some disconnected the battery under the front passenger side engine compartment. after reading, would agree be a good idea to disconnect the batteries to avoid any problems. and in some cases, if there were an "srs" fault and either the passenger child seat sensor (most common) was fixed, the srs light went out on its own..... so disconnect the batteries. hope it doesn't create a "srs" light/fault on dash. good luck!

Thanks for the help guys. I'll try to pull it off but I'll try to find a person with a STAR tool anyway.
