Commonly used tools

Hey all.

I've been looking under the hood and trying to work out what tools I need. Most of them are not the typical 14/16/18mm bolts and nuts I'm used to seeing!

I've tried to search for commonly used tools and only came up with torx bits e8-e18.

Anything else worth getting for common jobs? I want to replace the SC oil some time this week, as well as install my new HE, BWK and pulley in due time.

Cheers in advance!

If you're going to do the camber and toe arms, you will need Torx, E-Torx, spline/triple square bits, hex/allen wrenches, and standard box wrenches. You will also need one or two bits that aren't included in most sets.

Most of that will also be used under the hood, but I would highly recommend one of the special wrenches for the spring-style hose clamps. All you need is for one of those clamps to be rotated the wrong way in a tight space to give you a really bad day. When I was doing my heater control valve, I had one clamp that took me nearly an hour to remove because I couldn't grab it with needlenose pliers or vise grips. Also for your list... needlenose pliers and vice grips.

Oh what the hell, here's a list off the top of my head:

*Torx bits
*E-Torx bits
*Metric sockets (8mm up to, umm, really big)
*Metric box wrenches (same size as sockets)
*Hex/Allen wrenches (ball end to get at some things at an angle)
*Spline/triple square bits (if working on suspension)
*Good ratchets in 1/4, 3/8, & 1/2 -inch drives
*Spring-style hose clamp wrench
*Screwdrivers (don't cheap out, get the best set you can afford)
*Breaker bar
*Cheater bar that will fit over your largest box wrench, or at least the one for the supercharger pulley bolt
*Torque wrench
*Needlenose pliers - I bought a variety set and one has tips that are more like pincers. They were great at pulling spark plug boots.
*Vise grips
*Various wire brushes for corroded/rusted hardware
*Short and long socket extenders
*Swivel joint for ratchet
*High quality zip ties, cable wrap, and electrical tape
*Transmission fluid dipstick
*A hammer for stress relief and emergencies
*Grabby/magnetic thingy so you can try to grab one of the small bolts that falls under the supercharger even though you stuffed a rag in there to prevent the small bolt from falling under the supercharger
*Tap and die/thread repair kit
*Heli-coil set
*Magnetic bowl to hold nuts and bolts
*Creeper
*Jack and jack stands

Sweet thanks for the list. I've got the bulk of that gear, just some odds and ends I really need now. Picked up a good set of Allen keys yesterday as I replaced the SC oil. Really does smell like a barn yard. Also got a set of female and male torx bits. I think I'll be okay now.. Besides some hose clamps.

I had a pretty thorough search (I'm on holidays now so plenty of time on mbworld getting done) and most detail what to do, not the tools involved.

Think I might head to the dealer today to see about the transmission and engine dipsticks.

Are the pliers to get those freaking-pain-in-the-damn-**** hose clamps off merc specific? Man those clamps suck the freaking big one! Replacing them as I go, but want to split the cooling now and I cant get to the t-piece to get rid of the clamp
