My name is Matt and I have been a long time looker here. I bought this 2005 E55 from my buddy and forum member here (Typhoon43). I bought the car knowing I would have to do a few things to it. Car put down 501 hp/569 tq to the wheels I am told.

The first thing I need to do is tires and fix the alignment issues that wear the tires out. Car is lowered via star. I have rear control arms from Kmac, not sure if that's right but what is the best for fixing the front issues? The right front tire is showing the cords.

As far as tires go. The car has what I believe are S65 19" wheels but I may be wrong on that. Right now the car has Nitto Invos and I only have about 500 miles on them since I bought it. 245/35/19 fronts, 275/30/19 rears. I only drive this car a few thousand miles a year as it is just a toy and I am looking for something that matches this type of car.

My options that I have seen are the Nitto Invos, Nitto 505, Michilin Super Sports, and Toyo 888.

Not looking for a track tire. Nice street tire with decent wear and good traction. Just a toy car to play with.

I got contis DWS. I needed a tire that could handle the irregular weather patterns where I live.

If I lived somewhere warm and dry all year def would go with PSS just on the praise they get on this forum.

 

Lots of prior posts on this, don't hesitate to search. Public opinion seems to be that Mich PSS are the way to go.

Not sure they carry our size in 19s, but I'm sure that's easy to find.

 

Check your thrust arm bushings, and control arm bushings. If they're worn out, then you're going to need tires again in 3k miles if you don't replace them. Don't ask me how I know.
Make sure to set your alignment (toe) at the height you'll be driving at mostly. (unless you like buying new tires)

And for tires, I just got yokohama advan sport a/s on my fronts. Very affordable, but a newer tire, so not too many reviews out.

 

Will do. Thanks for the replies. I have been leaning toward the Michelin Pilot Super Sports and they do make 245/35/19 and 275/30/19. The Michelin Pilot Sport 2s do not come in the correct size. Does anyone know for sure what wheels I have on this car?

I run that size in PSS. They are a killer tire setup. The warm weather grip is awesome.

 

Can't beat the grip of the PSS's but they will wear fast, and are crazy expensive. I just blew one of my rears so I'll probably be switching to something else due to the cost and wear.

 

I have the Michelin Pilot Sport AS/3 - amazing tire, and long treadlife - grip nearly as well as the PSS

 

I would have said the PSS hands down with Conti DWS (all season sport) and the Hankook Ventus V12 as a second. BUT........ with @Toadster just posting that he has the M AS/3's and they grip just or almost as well as the PSS, I might just switch to those due to moving to DC soon. That way I don't have to have winter tires for a few days. I have the AS/3's on my Maserati Q but obviously doesn't have the power of this so cannot compare. But the ride is sublime.

 

I am located in Florida so I do not have to worry about snow. I think I will be ordering the Michelin Super Sports tomorrow. Now, I need to find a good wheel repair place to fix the curb rash on the wheels.

 

I agree with Enigma94, the PSS's are great but they really do wear out fast and in my opinion are overpriced.

 

I also hear cam bolts wear on these things...I don't believe there's a way to check if they're bad, but they're cheap enough to replace and not worry about if it was a waste of $$$

 

Everytime I look at that picture, it looks like a 4-door CL65. Must be the wheels.

 

Are they CL65 wheels?

 

I think all of the 65 models around that time had similiar wheels, just different widths and/or offsets?

 

PSS all the way bro, unless the temp drops below 46 then they become the opposite - it's like driving with ice cubes strapped to the wheels.

 

I went from Hankoook Ventus Evos even at 285 and 275 width. Went with PSS in stock 265 width on my next set and dropped full second off my best 0-60 with those tires PSS will run you about $1100 out the door on all four corners. Worth every penny.

 

Tires:
I have almost 6 years experience with this car and been through 4 sets.
Michelin for the win! PSS if you will NEVER drive below 45 degrees, PS3 AS if you want some cold weather/snow driving.
Conti DWS have a tendency to not stand up to our weight class. Load rating is very important with our beasts.
Wheels:
If they don't have "AMG" stamped on the outside of the rim then they are reps -Sport Edition ST4. If they do have it then they are almost surely OEM. Since this wheel came in several different configurations, depending on what AMG they were on, you will have to remove the wheels to see which part number it is. AMG wheels are stamped with offset as well.

Also I would have your suspension inspected. Corded front tires is a sure sign of a problem.

 

Whatever you do, don't get Bridgestone Potenzas. I'm going for Continentals next

 

I put conti DWS on my 07 infiniti g35x and it made it handle and drive like i was rolling on marshmallows. It is a lot softer tire, which reduces handling some and give a softer ride. That can be a pro or con depending on how you look at it. After they got broken in the handling did improve. One other thing is as they get under 50% tread life they will start getting pretty noisy. I opted to not put them on my SL55 b/c of the noise factor.

Nitto Invos suck. The sidewalls on those things bruised & bubbled if I just looked at them wrong.

PSS is my tire of choice. They grip like there is no end. It really takes a lot to break them loose. I DD my E and even in the cold winter we had here with many mornings in the single digits and cold weather I never had a real issue with traction. They certainly were a bit wiggly under hard acceleration and could get the traction light to come on coming out of a corner but nothing that suck the leather up my rear end.
