Question Playing MP3s

I don't suppose the COMAND in the E55 can play MP3s? It must be able to decode MPEG, so it seems that it should be trivial for it to play MP3s.

If not, are there any good solutions for having MP3 capability added to the car, which don't involve butchering the car in any way?

Nope, the E55 cannot natively play MP3s. But on the 04's there is an AUX jack in the glovebox so you can use an MP3 player. I've been using my iPod since the day I got my E55.

Norb,

What type of jack is it, and can you connect up video devices as well?

Thx.

Ok, I'm no expert, but it is my understanding that a DVD is encoded using MPEG-2. Therefore I guess that COMAND must be able to decode MPEG-2 in order to play a movie, and so it should be no big deal to go the extra mile and decode MP3.

I am happy to be corrected, however.

According to other posters here, neither US nor Euro W211 models currently support MP3 CD playback. However, the following post seems to indicate that a firmware upgrade for Euro W211 nav systems coming soon will add this functionality:

For reference, the new nav systems in US and Euro W220s and W215s do support MP3 CD playback support.

I don't know, I think it has to do with the Nav ready Command module for 2004. If your car has the big screen then I'm pretty sure it has an AUX in. One way to check is to press the AUDIO button and see if AUX is an option on the soft buttons. Here is a pic from my car.

Cool, Norb. I was close to getting an Ipod as it was, what with Gollum having one. LOL Now I have to.
