how to remove e55 timing case?
How do I remove the timing case on an E55 engine?
I don't mean timing chain by the way, I'm talking about the timing case that sits on the front and has all the pulleys on it and also hosts the timing chain.
I've already taken off the heads. Do I need to remove the oil pan to remove the timing case?

Dammit!! Gonna need an engine crane and an engine stand. Even with the heads off the engine is so damn heavy. I was surprised at how heavy the heads are, I'd say both heads are 130 lbs.

I've been reading this thread, I know its old, but I'm needing a little bit of advice with a 2006 E55 Timing Cover. I'm in the process of replacing it, I'm seeing a little bit of conflicting info on the timing cover. I got the subscription at ALLDATADIY, and I've been going through it. There isn't any mention that the heads need to be removed when replacing the timing cover. Is that a requirement? The reason I'm asking is that because in one of the posts above it says that he'd already removed the heads and I've also seen a e55 engine rebuild (M113k) that the timing cover was put on first then the heads. Is that correct? I really would not want to screw around with the heads if at all possible. But I noticed sealant went in the area between the cover and the heads, not too sure how to do that if the heads are on. Any advice would be much appreciated!!

In my experience, if you are going to pull the timing cover, pull the engine and flip it over. Gives you a chance to reseal both pans and the rear main plate / seal. You will not have to replace head gaskets unless you bigger them up. I have done a many of front cover r&r and left the heads on. (272, 273 engines but same idea)
If you are planning on new head gaskets that is a different story. Also note that replacing chain rails may require the heads to be removed depending on what one.
My opinion, pulling oil pans and front covers in the car is wack. Raising the engine or lowering the sub frame sucks. You will get a sore neck from staring up if you have a lift and destroy your garage floor if you don't.
