I ordered and received my new fuel sender I got from ECS Tuning. I did the install and everything was good to go... until I went to plug in the connectors. This new unit has a different connector housing for the smaller of the two plugs. The photo of the part on ECS' website shows a connector similar to my old one.
Did I get the wrong part, or is there an updated harness I don't know about? And what is that thing on there? I notice OP's Aussie-spec fuel sender had nothing in that spot.
Your post caused me to go out and double-check the parts I received from ECS Tuning against the parts still installed on my car (somewhat disassembled while waiting on the second fuel sender seal). My connectors, like yours, don't match, despite being the part numbers listed in the Mercedes EPC.
Parts ordered from ECS but this issue is not their fault. They should, however, be made aware of this Mercedes-caused confusion. Part numbers:
211-470-00-00 Fuel Sending Unit
211-470-64-94 Fuel Pump Assembly (actually filter and regulator)
211-471-05-79 Fuel Sender Seal x 2
The EPC shows the above as the correct upgraded part numbers and the "Note" states the above "fuel sender" and "fuel pump" must be used together (as of 2/19/15).
The "Fuel Pump Assembly" (actually the filter and pressure regulator assembly 211-470-64-94) listed above has a different connector (see attached photo). It is possible to cut the old connector off the harness, crimp on sockets, and connect the sockets to the new connector. Having said that, include an adaptor with the new part! My initial estimate is this will cost me minimum one week to find an adaptor. If I hack the harness I could modify it with two days effort but that makes my blood boil at not modifying it properly. Crap like this sours me on Mercedes and reduces the odds I would recommend a Mercedes to anyone.
I'll stop by the local MB dealer and see if they know of an adaptor but it would be good if the rest of y'all also search for a solution. If anyone finds the adaptor (if it exists) post it.
Edit: attached photo seems to also have the succeeding two images with part numbers from my next post.
See attached for screen shots of fuel pump and fuel filter/pressure regulator part numbers and superseding part numbers. Straight from the EPC. No note of adaptor cables.
Edit: maybe the part numbers listed under item 40 are really the adaptors meant for item 55? One is a cable tie but the others are not coming up on my three favorite MB parts sites.
211-540-07-00 ??
002-997-24-90 cable tie
203-997-04-81 ??

yes there are extra parts listed under item 40 as well as item 55. epc is telling you the updated parts require those extra part numbers.
I'm going to melt down if my car requires something bar the three parts I've ordered in. THe ones I've got on order look exactly the same as what is coming out though, so I figure I should be okay. Not being in the USA for parts is pretty *****.
I just got off the phone with ECS. I was about to arrange for a return of this unit, but the sales guy went and checked with the parts guy. This is indeed the most recent pump. There is an adapter for the harness that will allow the old harness to plug in here. It's like $10.50, but I didn't get a part number. He will have it by Friday and will ship it to me. They comped the shipping since this adapter should have been listed on their site.
I'm slightly annoyed that I have to wait, but relieved that I don't have to swap those parts again. I've inhaled enough gas fumes for the week.
Your local dealer might have the part in stock if it's one of those 3 numbers that bbirdwell listed.
Beat me to it, Denroll. Here's a photo of the adapter I picked up at the dealership.
211-440-05-07 Cable Harness. ~$15 at the dealer. This is a must-have if part number 211-470-64-94 is ordered.
The others are on order...another cable harness and a feedthrough since they show as required for part number 211-470-00-00.
I am *so* glad you posted about this so I was forewarned!
I am glad the issue was sorted out. I am the parts guy here that they talked to. I wish I saw this earlier to get the part to you faster. My apologies for the delay.
bbirdwell,
I have images of the other part numbers you listed for the other side. Just so everyone can see them they are below: 2115400700 -
-Okay, I'm stuck 75% of the way through the install. New versus old fuel pumps have a different setup for the small return tubes. Large tubes are the same for old and new. Small tube has me scratching my head and I do NOT want to have to go back into the tank to correct any errors.
-For a bit I thought maybe I needed to transfer the old small Y-assembly to the new pumps (didn't make sense but maybe?). Looking at it closely the new fuel pumps use a completely different molding for the fuel pump housings. So...the Y-assembly appears to have been deleted from the new fuel pumps.
-Would anyone point me in the correct direction? I have the filter/regulator installed, fuel pumps out, and tank sealed with fuel pump cover until I can figure this out.
-FWIW, I'm hoping the old fuel filter and pumps were the cause of my car just dying and placing me on the side of the road. Pre-filters covered in crap and the plastic housing around the electrical connectors blackened from heat caused by over-current conditions.
My pressure was 65psi and with the factory filter removed and an inline put in it jumped to 80psi. Big restriction in the filter and it had 40,000 miles on it!
Look into the Innovate set up. I use that for my AFR and its a very small square display that fits perfect above the steering column ...or where ever you want. I can be programed and set up to log as well on your pc. Plus any problems....send it right back and they will repair/program whatever you need. very good customer support!
