Heads up gents: CLS55 in Carmax

I'm sure you guys have stumbled across Doug Demuro's articles about carmax and their gold standard warranties. I paid just $2800 (4 years/60,000 miles) for mine and its paid for itself 3x over already.

They'll also cover things that aren't in the warranty either if you catch it within the first 30 days of purchase (they covered my p030 brake rotors and pads just because I made a fuss).

Carmax sucks. Their prices are high retail. I can find cars atleast 40% cheaper everywhere. If I wanted to pay 80% of what the car cost new I would buy a new one with 100k coverage. It's borderline buy here pay here. Do you shop at RTO places too?

Spec out a similar transferable exclusionary warranty for these cars and you'll know what I mean.

The motivation of buying a car here is obviously not for the initial cost savings, it's to utilize a warranty on a 11 year old vehicle which parts are obviously wearing out and that your modifications can potentially can cause major failure. I've been down that road enough times to where I'd rather have the peace of mind to have another entity pay for it.

no haggle price.... LOL...

They have the consumer so freakin' fooled. Its amazing how their business model works in the industry that is completely built its reputation on negotiation.

Just paid 2800? Which car did you buy from them? what year, miles please? That seems very cheap. What's the deductible? They quoted me 7k for a clk63 black. thanks

Bought in September 2013 for 34k, car is a cls55 with p30 package and had 48,000 miles.

Deductible is $300 / 4 years / 60,000 miles

So far they've paid in just over $10k in warranty claims (including the $2500 brake job in the beginning)

With your quote, it unfortunately looks like the fun is at an end. The only reason to buy from carmax was that amazingly cheap awesome warranty but alas it looks like they caught on.

Think about the warranty cost being that $2800 + the inflated price they sell you the car at. You can get that same car for around $25k elsewhere... so you do the rest of the math.

This place is a joke.
I can tell you that the Carmax extended warranty is great. They cover many things that other warranty's will not. However, Carmax is overpriced, and is targeted towards subprime buyers with bad credit, or other foolish people who walk in the door without researching prices first. I looked at a car there once, and laughed when the people told me the price was "no haggle" after I made an offer...I ended buying a newer car with less miles for less money 15 miles away from a dealership, even after I showed them the ad for it.

Not really.... with Carmax you can always negotiate the price. CLS55 is about $20k to $30K today in realistic pricing depending the mileage and equipment. I see people try to sell for high 30k but won't move the car. Heck, I see CLS63 55TT 2012 for $50K now !

Actually I agree with you, 99% of the time it's a really bad idea to get a car from Carmax however there are those rare exceptions when the stars do align. This article is a good example of what not to get: newer Japanese cars or Luxury cars that still qualify to be CPO'd.

The AMG's of our vintage can no longer qualify to be CPO'd however and now most aftermarket warranties no longer want anything to do with these cars. The ones that are still in the game are either over-priced or have questionable reputations at best. Spec out a reputable exclusionary warranty for these cars and you'll find most to be around 7-10k.

Things just have to align properly; priced competitively, low mileage, single owner, semi-exotic (AMG, m5/m6, etc) cars with questionable reputations and a future owner who will probably drive and modify the sh*t out of it that doesn't want to be financially liable for WHEN things break

Actually forget about AMG's, check out this m5 thread ($25,000 in warranty claims )
