Oil dipstick millimeters - what measures full?

I just changed my oil and filter. I let it drain for 20-30 minutes from both drain plugs until there was just the slightest of drips still present from both. I added about 8 quarts and the onboard sensors said it was still low so I went to about 9 quarts and the computer was happy.

I then checked the oil level with my Schwaben oil dipstick from ECS. The dipstick did not go in all the way but from what I've read the proper method is to just "Jam it in until it bottoms out". I did that and I'm getting 130mm - 132mm. Does that sound correct? I found the measurements below in another thread so it seems like I'm reading way low on the dipstick but the onboard computer and the amount I poured in both say differently.

161 mm = minus 0.5l
167-169 mm = oil level correct
175 mm = plus 0.5l

That's similar to other sources I've seen. It seems like something is incorrect though. I've poured 9 quarts in, the onboard computer seems happy and I'm still only seeing 130 - 132mm readings.

Don't know about the dipstick reading but if 9 Quartz is 8.5 liters (which I think it is), you're good to go

HeissRod - I'm at work so I can't post a picture right now, but it's the tube with the red cap above the back of the supercharger on the tube that points slightly toward the front of the car. I also bought a trans dipstick and checked the trans fluid in the tube that is further back and points toward the passenger side of the car with the black tamper evident cap. The trans fluid measured correctly even though I didn't add any since losing some replacing the TCU o-ring connector.

The one thing I read that I didn't think of earlier is that I could read the depth of the dipstick when inserted in the tube to make sure it's all the way in. Does anyone know what that measurement would be? Something like 600mm is what I'd be looking for, where the tube is on the dipstick when inserted all the way so I can make sure I'm jamming it in there far enough and not just hung up part way in.

Do you have a trans dip stick?

I would call ECS.

Or find an M113 ML dipstick.

Pics

One more try here before I call ECS. I checked it after the car had set for a few hours yesterday so it was still somewhat warm. I took a pic of the overall depth position of the dipstick as well as the oil level. At this point I've added just over 9 quarts of Mobil 1 0w40 and the onboard computer says the oil level is ok.

9 quarts is 8.5 liters, full is 9 liters, that,s why the level is slightly below 168mm.

I'm an idiot. I completely overlooked the quarts vs liters part of the equation. So, basically, everyone is using almost an entire two 5 quart jugs of oil for an oil change I assume? Walmart is the cheapest place I've found for Mobil 1 0w40 so that's where I've been buying it for years and it's 4.73 liters / 5 quarts per jug. I've got maybe 3/4 quart left between the 2 jugs so it makes a bit more sense now. Thanks.

I really miss the days of the dipstick hashmark readings... hot/cold... add qt... I've come to not trust my level sensor so I'm looking to simply check the oil level to see what it's up to, or lying about.

is there a dipstick you can leave in the oil tube all the time ? -- the ecs model says only for checking/measuring or the ml 113 dipstick can it be left in all the time ?

thx

You can check the actual oil level with the oil level sensor through the dash, it will give you a read out of the current number of litres. If you think the sensor is bad it is cheap to replace, though if it is bad a message will appear on the dash.

The E63 has it's own dipstick. The E55 does not have it's own dipstick-hence this thread.

The updated dipstick on E63s is a crap. Everybody says that it is not accurate. I drain oil from pan and cooler, add 8.5 quarts of oil and it shows that I’ve added way too much. The engine takes 9.5 quarts.

I cannot find old style dipstick, hence trying to see how many mm it should be.

The E63 dipstick doesn't have mm marks on it, just a high and low level markings. If your oil measures between the marks then your good. I prefer that it's closer to full.

The problem I am having is that my "updated" dipstick shows over full when I put 8 quarts of oil. I've been complaining about this in above responses. Somebody confirmed that the updated dipstick actually lies.

Did you buy the dipstick from Mercedes, or off of Amazon or eBay? I prefer to get the genuine article, as knock offs don't always work as intended.

I bought it from MB dealer. And I always drain oil from both places. Regardless, as soon as I put more than 8, it shows above max. I wish I kept the old original dipstick. So I am just putting 9 now and driving, but the dipstick is useless as I can't measure accurately.
