Tune a W221 E63 to get E55 type torque curve?
Is there a simple way to mod an E63 without a supercharger to get the same type of low end torque as the e55?
Bottom line is that I'm accustomed to the torque in the 55k engine (coming from an sl55), so the 63 disappoints in that regard from what I remember.

A tuner could add more timing in the lower rpms to get out the hole a bit quicker but it won't feel like a 55K.
Or maybe a bigger rear end gear.

Haha as good as the E63 is it's no substitute for an E55 - know what I'm torquing about...?

Sorry bro, Not without some serious modifications even then no not really… You can not "tune in an entirely different power band" 63 power band great too, lots of top end pull.
Powerband comes with rotating assembly and engine design. Unless you change your crankshaft, cylinder head design and camshafts. You won't get that monster torque down low like an E55.

I agree. When i drove one it didn't feel fast. I have no doubt it was but it certainly lacked the immense down low torque of which E55 is the only solution. Of course the sound was fantastic.

OK thanks. I'm gonna have to keeps searching for an E55 then. I just test drove an '08 E63 and it was nice and refined but felt to me like a totally different car. More civilized, too many gears, and less fun. Also, the steering felt heavier and the car for that matter too. clarkson thought the 63 was better when it came out and I usually value his opinions since he thought so highly of the sl55.

Watch out the 07-09 63 engine issue. I still think 05/06 E55 the best buy ever. Easy to mod more power and $500 for E63 front bumper.

True, you need the left, center, right supports and the center foam, the latch and the grille. The side rails are the same though.
HEY! Stop hitting me on the head, I said it was extremely expensive
That TVS2300 and or Weistec installed costs more than an E55

I've got solution for my e55 v. e63 indecision. I've reserved an e55 via relayrides for 2 days. My plan is to drive it around and get a good feel for it, then drive it to the dealer that has the e63 so I can test drive them back to back!

E55 will rape it even with just a tune though. E55 is more like riding a storm, wild and scary (well not really scary after you get used to it, you'll definitely catch the modding bug), at least with the 63 you know you have to spend way too much to get anything so you won't bother.
By the way there is no W221 E63, it's either W211 or W212.

I'd get the E63, I just love the way they feel. So tight and sharp.

Also my "renting the E55 then test drive an E63" idea didn't work out so well yesterday! The E55 got heatsoak and went into limp mode after 30 seconds of passes on the freeway...it was 95 degrees out though, but still it shouldn't do that. Also the tranny was thudding hard--not exactly the great comparo when one car is at 50%. rats.... Someone warned me about that on here,...most e55s you test drive will have an IC/pump issue, which makes it hard to draw comparisons. Anyone in the bay area that has an e55 in working order? I'd love to come for a drive with you in the next 24 hours!!!

Every E55 face the same IC pump problem specially summer time. Few years ago I did 2 pulls then the car runs like 4 cylinder Camry. Upgrade the pump for $150 (include labor) never have that issue again.
