Battery Protection w/ aftermarket sound system
hi all, i dont post on here much but having an issue with my '03 e55. have an aftermarket sound system put in. if the subs hit a bit hard the vehicle goes into Battery Protection mode and shuts off convenience functions. radio, cig lighters, etc.
system consists of 2 x 12" Focal subs. Audison AV5.1K Amp. Focal components in the front and Focal coaxials in the rear. Just had brand new Odyssey battery put in by the same shop that installed the system. Alternator is brand new.
Shop is very reputable and works on all high end vehicles. They have never seen this on any Mercedes they've worked on. They ran tests to the best of their capability and couldn't figure why its happening. Just curious if any members on here has had problems with aftermarket stereos.

Sounds like the sub amps are drawing enough juice to momentarily drop the voltage and trigger low battery. Hook up a multimeter to the battery while engine is running and music is playing, and see what the voltage drops to. If it is dropping, then try installing a large farad capacitor as that should help with the big current peaks.

Amps are drawing enough power for the car to think the charging system is failing. Best advice i can give is may put a large capacitor between your battery and amp (it will be the buffer between deep bass notes, amps will suck up the capacitor charge instead of your battery).

Seen this plenty of times on mercedes veichles car is just seen a over load in current draw. A second gell cell battery and pac 200 isolator will do wonders. Take care.

Cheap multimeters don't show smaller spikes that are probably upsetting a Mercedes sensor. Install a farad cap, and see if it fixes it. Can also check voltage at the amp itself when the cutoff occurs. A second battery and an isolator would also probably fix it, but try a farad and be done with it.
