Gas Smell

Hi all,

There is a gas smell outside the cabin, and very little smell inside (I guess it comes from outside). The smell is very strong from the outside exactly above the rear right tire.

This problem happens mostly when the car idles for a long time. Also, since I bought this car, I've never been able to auto-fill the tank at any gas station, it keeps disconnecting the pump.

Few days ago checked the pumps and sending unit and they were dry and no sign of leaks.

Moreover, there is no check engine light or codes stores, and I've changed the pumps one year ago as well.

What is there at the rear right tire could be leaking gas evaporation ?
And why it doesn't auto-fill at gas station?

That's near the filler tube, yes? Have a look under the car, maybe you've developed a small leak near where the neck meets the tank.

No leaks under the car. I guess its an evaporation leak because weather here is extremely hot (most of the year) and this problem only occurs once the cars idles/driven for a while.

Could it be the charcoal canister ? But that should throw a CEL ... :/ ?!

Gas Smell

Have you done the fuel warranty repair? If not let the dealer figure out what's wrong (it explicitly covers fuel leak or fuel smell)

No warranties here. I'm not in the US, I live in UAE.

coincidence I see your post, was about to start a thread. im moving to Abu Dhabi next month for work & most likely shipping my E55 to bring it with me but my cousin who lives there advises against it & says that the cars there are GCC spec & designed to cope with the hot weather in the region... i wasn't buying it. he said in the case i decide to resell there, a USA spec car isn't desirable & a lot harder to sell bc of this, which i could see true due to mentality of buyers... is your E55 USA spec ?

Nope its Japanese spec.

I guess selling your car in the US and buying a Japanese spec one here will save you money and will get you a lower mileage (50k - 70k km).

I've changed the charcoal canister. But the gas smell is not fixed ( outside, passenger side rear tire )

Smell is only there when the car have been running for a while under the sun.

Is that smell coming from the breather tube since the gas is getting hot and evaporates ? Any ideas ?
