NanoPaint MBUSA Answers...

I received a reply from MBUSA today regarding my question of how to tell if a car had the new nanopaint clearcoat. Their reply follows:

"Thank you for your internet message.

In response to your message we contacted our Technical Department who advises that if your E55 is produced January 2004 or later it will have this nano-particle paint process. On the B-pillar of your vehicle there is a metal plate on that plate your 3-digit exterior paint code will have the prefix "C". (C_ _ _)

The opportunity for review is appreciated.

Sincerely,
Robyn Letz
Customer Relations"

Hopefully that'll lay to rest all the "does it" or "doesn't it" have the new paint process questions.

I guess that means my November 2002 produced '03 CL55 has it too. C744 is my color code on the sticker.

They must have started using this technology about a year earlier than they told us.

BTW, I checked mine has the C code. I thought it might have been as I have very little chips, on my previous MB's it would have shown many more.

Can anyone confirm that the info contained in the original post is correct?

My paint code is "C197" (obsidian black) but my car was built in 11/03.

While I'd love to be wrong, I have a hard time believing MB would have begun using the new nano-paint in 2003 without 1) any public relations info or 2) raising prices.

Unfortunately. I think we are misinterpreting what the MB rep. stated in the reply. It is possible and probably likely that the rep. meant the following:

1. All cars produced after January 2004 have the new paint technology; and

2. By the way, if you want to know your paint code, here is how you find it (look on the B pillar).

Even though it is unclear, there is nothing to suggest that the rep. meant that all cars with the "C" paint prefix have the special paint.

Just my two cents.

Agreed, we should check someone with the same color from 03 and someone that just received their vehicle to see the difference in codes. Maybe we can find a pattern. I doubt it though. Seems to me they are just new numbers.

I have looked at a number of 2003 CL models. They ALL have the 4 digit (Cxxx) code. However, 2002 and eariler CL models DO NOT have the 4 digit code, however they have just a 3 digt (xxx) color #.

I must agree with CAE55. Since it seems many cars have the "C" prefix that were certainly built before Jan. '04, we must assume that the "C" by itself does not signify the new process.

Her reply can easily be construed to mean that only cars with the "C" have new process. But that's obviously misleading.

Is MBUSA just trying to play salesman and telling us what we want to hear?

There was an article from Autospies stating that the nano-tech clearcoat would be available on all high-end CL, SL, S Mercedes in early fall of 2003 with the other models (E, CLK, etc.) to follow in early 2004. Mine says C723 and is Pewter Silver. Build date was 08/2003. 2004 Model SL55 AMG.

I e-mailed MBUSA on 2/8/04 regarding nanopaint. They called me today at my office.( Not bad customer service) According to Bill "if you have a "C" preceeding the paint code on the B pillar you have it". My E55 has a build date of 12/3 and it has the C723 pewter. He stated further, the process was implemented at different times depending on the model. E class was sometime in the fall of '03. He couldn't give me a month. This confirms some of the other posts on the board. Funny thing most sales people know nothing about it.

Woo Hoo!!!

Thanks for making that call, JB!!
That makes my whole week.
I was really irritated that I had just barely missed (so I thought) the implementation date on my black (pain in the rear) car.

I'll be very interested to see how it holds up compared with my last 3 black cars.

040 would be black normal. If it said C040 that would be black nano.

Finally after 9 long months of waiting, my car has finally arrived at my dealership. When I went to test drive it, first thing I looked for was the paint code. It read "C040".

Since I'm going from one Black car to another, I should be able to see a difference in a few months time and only time will tell if all this fuss was justified. But I hope it works as advertised.

Hopefully by Sat. they'll have painted and installed my Lorinser CL type grille, spoiler and flat hood badge.

That article on German Car Fans makes it sound like this Nano coat is brand new as of Jan 1 2004. Service Info 98.00/14c came out yesterday as an update to 14b that came out in Dec 03. It was revised to list the expanded model range as of Sept 03.
No where in the DTB is Nano mentioned. It is PPG CeramiClear clear coat.
Here is the DTB:

Subject: Models 170, 203, 208, 209, 211, 215, 220, 230

"As of June 3, 2002 [YES 2002!], the model C215 is now painted with PPG CeramiClear clear coat which reduces visable scratching <snip>. ALL CeramiClear paint has a C in front of the paint code.
This clear coat is being phased in on the other models listed in the subject above.
As of July 14, 2003, all 170 and 230 models shall be painted using this clear coat.
Additionally, a limited number of C208 and W/S210 model vehicles , have also been painted using this clear coat BUT they do not have the C before the paint code. There are 3 C208 vins listed and 32 W210 vins listed. I will not list them here. Pmail me at aufever@prodigy.net if you want them or a copy of the DTB.

Where do I find the "B" pillar?

Okay, for those among us who are less knowledgeable, just where do I find the "B" pillar and where along it do I find the paint color?

The B-Pillar is to the left of the driver's side seat. It should be on the lower right area of the door jam. It's usually a 3 digit code (ie. 040-Black, 744-Brilliant Silver, etc)...
