My crank pulley failed!!
Good evening guys,
This is something that I have honestly never experienced ever. Today on the drive home my OEM crank pulley failed like in broke apart and came off the housing. It managed to rip the charger belt in two with a clean break and damaged some of the cooling lines (possibly the radiator as well).
I really would have never expected something like that to fail on a car much less a Mercedes. Is this a common fault and what would anyone suggest at this point? Replace with OEM or upgrade?

Well it happens. I have seen it. Most important how is the end of your crank? Do you still have a keyway and what does it look like. Sorry BTW. 500 lbs of Tq takes its tool over 10+ years

Where are all the people with pitchforks, like when this happens to a s/c pulley?
We should get a crank scattershield made up. lol

Thank you for the responses guys its been a definite learning experience. OMG this is crazy and the dealer was speaking code when I called this morning so I know the bill is going to be STUPID!
I can totally understand that parts designed to fail can help keep the car overall running more consistently but dang. I guess I need to see what the damage is and go from there if anything it might be an opportunity to upgrade the pulley overall and make some progress out of the whole situation.

How many miles on the car and did you just buy the car? Reason being that it is possible that the previous owner put the car back to stock when selling it, many do that to hide certain bugs.

I bought the car about 3mths ago with approx. 125K on it... it was running like a clock and had the comfort that I had made a great decision till I took it for an oil change and bam (literally rofl)
The shop said it was a common issue as well and will require further inspection to see if the front cover needs to be replaced as well since contact is common and suggests replacement. This is going to be 'spensive!!

The dealer just called me before they closed and they said they have never seed the pulley fail in that fashion before. Literally broken into three pieces and ripped the belt clean across like it was cut in two.
So goes the way of the Mercedes AMG life total (projected) 1800.00 !!!!!!!!

Happen to me a few months ago the outer ring fell off, I was able to drive home with out the supercharger belt ( car was much quieter) but replaced the pulley and that was it..It was a rubber seal in between that gets brittle over time

dchl21 - I may have to hit you up for it as soon as I get an idea how long it would take to deliver the new pulley. Please send me a PM

As I read more I am thankful as well, the ring totally separated and broke into three pieces that's the part that I cant understand. I should have taken a photo of the ring and the belt it was crazy like someone literally cut the belt with a knife. The thermostat housing was damaged as well so that's a plastic part that may have just been in the way as it came apart... I have been searching for a metal aftermarket replacement like I did for my BMW but apparently none are available.

My outer ring fell off my stock crank pulley exactly the same as MiamiE55. Although I thought there was nothing else effected I suspect that the 84mm supercharger pulley was damaged at the same time, since when reconnected later we noticed it was wobbling as the springs had been stretched. A lucky save here also since we caught it prior to imploding/exploding/doing major damage. Also the water pump and alternator needed replacing pretty well straight after so I suspect they were stressed when the harmonic balancer went.
At any rate I ended up going with a 180 crank pulley and went back to stock on the supercharger pulley. I don't know what your current mods are but this could be a chance to look at upgrading. For the price the stealership is quoting you could really unleash your beast...
As I was in a smaller town at the time my crank pulley ring sheared off I ended up driving probably a couple of thousand k's over the next few weeks without my supercharger engaged. Did no discernable damage just made me appreciate the supercharger all that much more!
