How do you get your headliner back INTO the car?

I just helped a friend upholster his W211 headliner in suede. We got the headliner out of a smashed car with no rear door. It was a ***** but it got out. The original one was in bad shape so we didn't bother pulling it out in one piece from his car.

Now the new headliner isn't really fitting in through the rear door. I can't for the life of me figure out how we're gonna get it in.

So we got the new headliner from a car without a rear door but is that really required, the removal of the rear door?

Has anyone taken theirs out and put back in and how did you maneuver/fit the thing back in?

It's so fragile too, if it has some flexible strong plastic it could be bent but this thing is FRAGILE.

I think that's a little drastic.

Lay the seats as flat as possible. And it goes in from the right rear door. It takes flexing to fit it. Not bending, and its a tight fit

This is correct! If you want to make it even easier you can remove the front passenger seat. This is not necessary, but does reduce the flexing of the headliner.

This is not correct. Whoever told you this has never done it the right way before.

They're just trolling, forget them.

Yes we took the rear AND front seats out as well as the D pillar right next to the rear seat and the center console. It's still a very difficult task. I feel if the rear door comes off then it will be alot easier no?

By the way how is that thing that goes into the door when it opens and closes removed, the one between the hinges. Obviously that and the wiring has to be taken out first as it's weak and then the hinges. Shouldn't be too time consuming to take off the door and put back.

There is truth to what they are saying. The absolute "correct" way to do this is how the car was built which means through the windshield opening. Unfortunately mercedes made a compromise/financial decision to make a work instruction that says go through the door opening in case they ever had to pay a warranty claim that involved removal of the headliner. So, factory installs straight in no bending and workshop instructions want you to hack it.

You must remove the windshield or back glass one of the two. I work at a high end body shop and that's what we do everytime we have to replace a headliner. Keep in mind it's not the shops decision but the insurances. Yes there's a chance the glass might break in the install or removal but that's a chance you might have to take. Just my 2 cents.

Hope this helps.

Truth yes, realistic not so much. Never have I had to remove a piece of glass to remove/install a headliner. We(technicians) are forced to figure things out due to WIS being the great wealth of knowledge that it is.

A body shop has the liberty of not being paid by MB warranty. It would certainly be easier to remove the windshield, and then the headliner. Though this is not really a DIY type of job for the most part.
