Finally got the new E55 home.....many questions from this AMG Newby

Finally got the car home. I bought it from a BMW dealer in Denver, where it was a trade in on a M5. I'll attempt to attach some very quick photos I took tonight to this post. It seems to have some mods on it, leading me to believe that the prior owner may very well have been a participant on this forum. Does anyone here by chance recognize the car? I'd love to know some history on it. If you'd rather not post the info then please PM or email me.

Having it home for a few hours I have far more questions than answers about the car. I'll ask some of them here, hopefully some of you will chime in with answers as you know them......

1- I have the owners manual on computer via download. Where can I get NAV and audio manuals? I'd prefer paper, but will be grateful for download if that's all that's available.

2- The car has a real stumble, in fact it falls flat on its face on a 2-3 shift with the pedal to the floor. Any ideas? Other than that it seems to run very good.

3- There is a sort of ring shaped very dim light strip around the dome light and sunroof controls that stays on. I can't see a way to turn it off. Is that something that's permanently illuminated?

4- From the photos, other than obviously the wheels, can you spot any mods? Is that a E55 front bumper? Are those stock exhaust tips? Any info on either is appreciated.

5- The car seems to have no cup holder. Where can I get one, other than at the dealer? I'm sure a new one from the local M-B dealer is more than I paid for the car.

6- Is there a way to find out if the fuel pump/tank has been replaced under the extended warranty?

7- The start function by hitting the shifter button isn't working. The battery for the key seems to be good and it's in my pocket. I press on the brake and hit the button on the shifter and nothing at all happens. If it matters, any time I turn off the car with the key removed and open the door, the remove key message comes up with the accompanying very annoying chime, even though the key has been removed from the ignition switch. Ideas?

8- I'm told that the two aluminum pieces on either side of the supercharger that say AMG on them are "surge tanks". What do they do?

I'm heading over to Shardul's place tomorrow, weather permitting, to do a mild drop on the car via STAR. I'm thinking just enough to tuck the fender very slightly below the tire tread. He's offered to also do a thorough read on the car via STAR to see what comes up as a problem.

The car seems to be in super condition, it's got 80K miles on it. It seems tight as a drum. Hopefully I did well on it. I paid $15,800 for the car. It's more than I see them usually going for, but it's a 2006 and in great shape, I'd rather pay a bit more for a car as clean as this. My neighbor couldn't believe it wasn't a brand new car when he saw it.

Thanks in advance for any info you guys can offer up. Hopefully, Shardul has some more input he can give me tomorrow.

This car is really cool, I look forward to driving it for years to come.

3. Ambient mood lighting. You can set it for low, medium, or high. A bottle of wine and some soft music completes the scene. A buxom female companion makes it even better. ;-)
4.Looks stock. Be sure to inspect the inside walls of your rims. Mine looked fine on the outside but I located three cracks in one wheel on the inside wall.
5. Cup holder goes in the center console. Not the same cup holder as the non-AMG. Approximately $100 for a replacement. It is an AMG after all.
6.If replaced at an MB dealer, it is in the electronic system. However, it isn't so much the fuel pump as the fuel filter/regulator ($470 or so). If there is no record it was replaced, just take a deep breath and pay for the replacement now. Seriously. Fuel filter/regulator, fuel pumps, *and* the fuel pump relay hidden behind the panel on the passenger side of the trunk. No, I don't care if an internet search says the fuel pump relay is on the driver's side. On an AMG, it is not! Search under "W211 fuel pump replacement", cry a few tears over the trials and tribulations the rest of us suffered, then just write a check and replace the parts ASAP. Shardul can assist; he's good people.
7. Search "keyless go". Most likely a broken wire and easily repaired by you.
8. Ummm...I thought that was where air filters were located?

Talk with Shardul about the pros and cons of locating a diagnostic system. You can't own a W211 E55 without one. I mean it. It is worth every penny. Also, sign up for the Mercedes Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC). It's free and extremely helpful to find the latest part numbers before you go to the dealer.

Best of luck to ya. If you're ever San Antone way, PM me. I'll do the same for you if I ever head east.

PS. Be prepared to work on the air bag suspension and be advised the alignment design sucks. If you keep chewing up tires, Shardul can assist with the rear camber and toe but the front will take either KMac or a complete replacement of the front bushings and ball joints.

PPS. I find my W211 to be maintenance intensive but I sure do enjoy her. Sort of like the high-maintenance gal I used to date in college. ;-)

Congrats on the car!

4. That is an E63 front bumper and grille.

7. Press the up arrow on the steering wheel and the noise goes away. Shardul could code the car to ROW (Rest of World) settings and it will eliminate the chime as well as turn off the bumper sidemarker lights and offer you a few more changes.

Thanks, I'll check that out. The car went through BMW used car inspection, whatever that's worth, and they did a bunch of work on it to bring it up to spec. They found a cracked wheel and had it repaired, balanced all 4 wheels, and did a 4 wheel alignment, among other things.

Guess I'll have to bite the bullet on that one. Gotta have a cup holder.

I thought the issue was the pumps and tanks. I'll do more research on what you suggest.

7. Search "keyless go". Most likely a broken wire and easily repaired by you.

I'm terrible with electrics. My chances of finding a broken wire are less than winning Lotto. I'll have to find someone local to troubleshoot that for me. Maybe Shardul will have some idea where to take the car to for that. I'm pretty good mechanically, but an electrical and tech zero.

8. Ummm...I thought that was where air filters were located?

Damned if I know!

Talk with Shardul about the pros and cons of locating a diagnostic system. You can't own a W211 E55 without one. I mean it. It is worth every penny.

Is that the same as a "STAR" system?

Also, sign up for the Mercedes Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC). It's free and extremely helpful to find the latest part numbers before you go to the dealer.

Where do I find that?

Best of luck to ya. If you're ever San Antone way, PM me. I'll do the same for you if I ever head east.

Absolutely, sounds like a great idea.

The inspection that the dealer did turned up a leak in one of the rear air springs, so they replaced both of them.

E63 bumper just gives a better (or at least different) look?

Congrats on the car. Try to move the shifter slightly to the right before hitting the button.

Definitely not the stock wheels. I don't recognize them, suspect they are some aftermarket replicas.

The quad exhaust tips are standard issue. That is an E63 front bumper conversion. Individual preference, it's cosmetic only. The front plate mount for the E55 bumper is crazy expensive, i think they can be had more reasonably for the E63 bumper. If you want to go legal that is...

Ambient lighting can also be turned completely off, which is always my preferred setting.

You can probably tell if any fuel tank/pump work has been done by removing the back seat bottom cushion and inspecting the pumps through the access holes. If they are old, it will be obvious.

Cupholder ?????

Thanks for all the replies, guys. I guess one thing at a time, for now the wife is asking about cupholders. I went on line and found a dealer selling parts on line that has a very nice system on their website with detailed diagrams.

They show two separate cupholders for the car. They have what they describe as "front cupholder", part #2116800591. It's essentially a plastic tray that has two round indentations in it to hold two drinks. It seems to just slide into the front part of the console and just lays in there. That seems to take up most of the usable space in the console. The price for this shows at $96.00.

Additionally, they show what most others on line show, something they call "rear cupholder", part number 66920118. This appears to mount on or near the rear wall of the console and pops up and swings out, holding drinks on two different levels. The price for this shows at $65.60.

So, the question is, what do you guys have, and what originally came with the car, one or both? Neither came with my car. Having lived with these, which do you guys prefer?

The front one would seem to be more comfortable driving, leaving me able to lay my elbow on the console at the rear of it while I drive with a drink(s)in the front of the console. However that takes up essentially all the space in there, leaving little room for sunglasses and other "stuff". The rear one seems to use far less space, but I am guessing that it gets in the way when extended and being used while driving.

I know this isn't the most urgent problem out there but for those of you who have used these, your thoughts would be appreciated.

With an 06 your only option is the double cup holder insert. The console layout in 05 changed to the sliding cover rather than the split lid opening.

Just took care of item 1 on the list. I located a complete set of owners manuals with the leather case for $40 on eBay. That looked like a decent deal so I grabbed them. Lots more to go.

The price for the front cupholder is crazy, but it does get the job done. As you well know, it's removable. So if a drink spills in there, you can remove the entire insert to clean it up. You are correct that it takes up pretty much all of the storage space.

The little slide out drawer next to the glove box is intended to hold your sunglasses.

Just found the cupholder

Just found the cupholder, for some reason it was in the trunk under the floor with the spare tire. One more item off the list.

Cool. Probably didn't drink in the car and wanted the extra room. It was a good move to keep it with the car.

I keep the cup holder folded up and in the glove box. When I need it I can slide it in and when I don't I enjoy the extra room since this car has NONE

Mercedes Electronic Parts Catalog. It's free but you have to use a credit card to sign up. Your card is not charged. The EPC will give you the latest part numbers for you car and you can also print out the data sheet.

The "surge tanks" are plenums. They allow each cylinder to get the same amount of air.
