I'm considering buying a used high mileage E63. What are the things I should look for? He is asking 17k, what do you guys think would be a fair price?

To be honest, take that car to a independent mechanic or the dealer an have them to a complete check. If all checks out $15k that is a very hard car to sell, i can't see him refusing that offer. GLWP!

I guess of the cam buckets and lifters haven't gone yet maybe it's ok. Those early M156's had a number of issues. If everything checks out $15-16k depending on condition would be reasonable IMO.

Yea that's why I stayed away from the e63.
OP do you plan on modding? For more power and speed?

Not sure but don't we always want more?
I was looking at w211 E55 but came across this E63.
I have W210 with 230k and the car is great. Figured another all motor
AMG would be a good choice.

IMO you should decide now whether you're serious about modding or not. Even though the E63 and E55 are both W211s they are very, very different cars in terms of handling, braking, and power delivery. You're definitely going to get more bang for the buck with the E55 mod-wise. That said, I'm very happy with the E63 - the M156 is the draw for me.

I paid 16k for my 07 e63.. had 114k miles 2 owners vehicle formally a CPO vehicle.. I tracked the previous owner and spoke to him.. Def gave me the thumbs up on my purchase.. only reason he traded it, was Because the warranty had expired.. so I def would dig up as much information on the car as possible and get a pre inspection done.. so what are the options on the car? that plays a part on the pricing...

definitely get a carfax and see what kind of work was done to it.. I even went as far as to calling both Mercedes dealers that the car was serviced at..... see if any engine work was done... mine had lifters, head gaskets done.. both. also a bunch of other repairs.. the previous owner told me he bothered the dealer to death about every little thing as he was covered under CPO warranty ..

Wow, at those prices, the car is worth more in parts.
