I would take it out completely, the top mounts will probably do everything you need them to do.. BUT, there's nothing wrong with a couple revisions, that's what this is all about

if you have the specs the shop i use for my turbo builds custom i/c. they spec the cores the way they want from overseas and cnc machine the end tanks in house then weld them up. let me know if i can help you further your project along

I'm on the path of keeping IAT's in check up to 200 mph with just intercooler and meth. We can now raise the boost and keep our blower's somewhat efficient. How funny would it be if our dated platforms started kicking *ss without nitrous and aftermarket blowers? Let me answer that for you.......

Anthony, Congrats and our dedication to the mile event is admirable.
Your CLS55 takes a lot more power VS a E55 as the rounded/sloped back end that makes the car look sexy, comes with a huge down force on the car and that means you could need another 60-70 hp over a E55 to make the same MPH. For example, mounting a flat horizontal wing on the rear could net another 4-6 mph. Even the big new modified S63 (630 rwhp range)bitrubo that was running 180.1 mph , has a cleaner drag coefficient at .28 ish but you make power, as you are faster and have more wind drag. Another example, is the 2016 supercharged Z06 vets with the 5 to 6"vertical tail fin ,,, they run 167 to 172 mph on average. Those that have removed the tail fin saw gaines of 4mph from that one change.
As you know, the mile event is hard for many to understand the physics of and it is like no other straight line race but is very addicting once a person try`s it. Like most powerful cars, they have to just take off slow and maybe not even get to full throttle till about 80 mph or traction is lost. At the end of the day, the mile is all about pushing through the "wall" and that starts about the half mile.

I have a question. So how much iat difference are we talking about with your new sensor position vs the stock location in terms of meth injection? 2 degrees? 20 degrees? 50 degrees?
From what I've read is windchill doesn't affect inanimate objects. Wind chill is a human sensation. So I'm interested how much difference a potentially wet iat sensor with the intake charge blowing on it reads vs what the oem iat sensor in your new installed position reads with, I assume, much less moisture on the probe.

Could the surge tanks be rotated 180 degrees so the air is incoming from the front side of the engine? That would eliminate the extra pass of piping, although assuming it would be easy to do this, I don't know if that would upset engine behavior.

On my set up (Weistec), the cruising IATs are significantly higher than I used to see with the stock sc - no doubt because of the clutchless sc pulley - however the increment in IATs when going WOT is lower than I used to see on the stock sc. The end result is much of a muchness

The taper is needed to equalize the pressure. Might not fit the space the other way. Coming in from the side you just need to equalize the cooling, but then you need a new air filter system.

Sorry for the confusion, I got what you meant. You are right, they might "just fit." I think my biggest objection is that it will look goofy and backwards.

the main potential issue is tuning I think, as it could change the airflow dynamics. But maybe not. Only one way to find out!

They are designed to equalize airflow, and since everything below them in the ports appears to be equal... This idea is actually growing on me a little. IF they bolt up properly, and IF they don't dent the hood. I just realized I have all the spare parts to check, I'll do it later today.

I checked. The fat end of the tank interferes with the SC a little and would need to be reshaped. Were the tank curls around would have to be cut off and swapped side for side, or changed. It is a 1/4" too tall for the hood of a CLS, so that would have to be reshaped as well. Sooo, could be done, but by the time you've done all that, your time might have been better spent building a side draft system, or just living with the extra pass. It does work after all.

I just thought I would chime in here to keep some info flowing until EREBUS gets back here. I got my hands on a mostly stock 2004 E55 and will be installing one version of this setup soon. The plan is to actually be able to data log temps on a mostly stock setup. Currently the test mule only has filters, plugs and a tune. (The tune will be switched to a RaceIQ tune as soon as I can work that out. Not that the tune that is installed is bad, I just want one that is good.)
With that being said, I am just working out the details on a split system with a better front mount and a staged trunk tank (there will be more to come on that). From there I have a master plan on a real time data logger to actually prove system function and best routing for maximum cooling ability. This car will be my semi daily as I have a motorcycle to help cut commutes in Dallas traffic. I have tested and weighed the cost/benefits of a Killer Chiller setup and am very leery of reduced cabin cooling in 100+ and high humidity of Texas summers. My wife and 3 boys put up with a lot. A warm cabin wont fly.
Since this is actually my first post here it will serve as a brief introduction. I have been working on these fine automobiles for a while now. I did not PDI my E55 but I did PDI them as they rolled into the dealer oh so long ago. I have a Masters degree in Mercedes Benz and access to all the factory tools and training from the meager CLA up to and including factory training on the SLR, SLS and AMG-GT.
I will update on my setup in a couple weeks.
